Important Tips For Doxie Parents
If you’re the pet parent to an adorable wiener dog (or two), you understand how very special they are. We are drawn to their endearing personalities and physical characteristics, and who wouldn’t be?
The American Kennel Association officially recognizes two sizes (standard & miniature) and three coat types (short, long, wired).
Dachshunds Have A High Risk for IVDD
Sadly, one in every four Dachshunds will suffer from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Intervertebral disc disease is a common condition characterized by the breakdown (degeneration) of one or more of the discs that separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae), causing pain in the back or neck and frequently in the legs and arms.
It is a genetic disease. All dogs are susceptible to IVDD, but some smaller dog breeds are more prone to the disease.
It is extremely important to lessen the stress on their spines so allow your doxie to use a dog ramp whenever it can. Because of the shape of their long bodies, and short legs, jumping is really not recommended. Each time your doxie jumps, she is putting extreme stress on her spine.
Nowadays, there are dog ramps for the home and car ramps for the road. These ramps are lightweight and very mobile. If you think investing in a dog ramp is too expensive, think about the vet bills and medication costs for treating your dog for IVDD. Click here to learn more about treatment and preventative care.
Dachshunds Tend To Suffer From Separation Anxiety
Dachshund pet parents know very well why we love our weiner dogs. They are one of the most lovable dog breeds around, and they demand our attention, and we are happy to give.
Unfortunately, when that attention is paused or when we have to leave for work, our doxies can suffer separation anxiety. But, how does a pet parent know their doxie is stressed? Below are signs that your four-legged buddy may be suffering from anxiety or stressed.
- increased sleeping
- decreased appetite
- digestive issues
- sudden aggression
There are several ways to help your dog in these stressful situations. Have a comfortable and safe place for your fur buddy to rest, give her calming chews, and ensure she has enough food and water while you are gone.

80% of Dogs Develop Arthritis or Joint Pain by 7 Years old – Here’s How to Protect Them
Most of us train our dogs when they are puppies to jump up on furniture. We think it’s harmless (and easier than always lifting them), but for dogs, couches and beds are very high compared to the size of their bodies.
Every time they jump it compresses their back and applies enormous force to their joints.
It’s no wonder that an incredible 80% of dogs experience arthritis or joint pain by only 7 years old.
Luckily, there is a vet-recommended solution.
It’s the PawRamp by Alpha Paw. An adjustable ramp that allows dogs to safely get on and off couches and beds. PawRamp makes joining you in bed or on the couch effortless and fun.
As a bonus, you can use code SAVE35 to get $35 off the PawRamp today.
