Friends of San Martin Animal Society

FOSMAS is an IRS-registered 501(c)(3) charity whose primary goal is to lower the euthanasia rate at the shelter, reduce the overpopulation of homeless cats, and provide public outreach services to help the animals in surrounding communities. We can accomplish this goal by increasing adoptions and expanding our volunteer program. We provide homes, medical and comfort care to all animals in foster care until adopted. We provide specialty services for care of pre-wean kittens, we train fosters in animal care and provide foster homes for those that choose to volunteer. FOSMAS provides all necessary food, supplies, and medical treatments for the pets it places in foster homes. We place them in adoption centers and holds pet fairs to find forever homes for the pets in our foster system.

Adoption Process
Our adoption process includes a potential adopter filling out an adoption application and signing an adoption contract. Our contract requires that the adopted kitty be indoor only, not declawed, have a back-up microchip phone number and person, among other clauses. We conduct an interview, and watch the family interact with the kitty. If everything goes well, we ask a $125 adoption fee for kittens and $75 for cats 18 months and older. We require all members of the household to be present for the interaction so we can see how the kitty responds with each person and vice-versa, that there are no allergic reactions, and that all family members are on-board with the adoption and kitty selected. We do this to minimize the risk of the kitty being returned and to make sure there are no allergy issues. If renting, we ask for a copy of the rental agreement showing pets are allowed, a letter from the landlord stating adopting this kitty is allowed or a phone call with the landlord will also be okay.
