Chama Valley Humane Society

Founded in 1998, the Chama Valley Humane Society is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization supported entirely through fundraising, private donations, and grants. Our mission is to provide no-kill solutions to reduce the population of homeless cats and dogs by sponsoring a spay and neuter program for companion pets and feral cats, working with regional shelters and foster homes to rehabilitate and rehome animals, and educating those in the community we serve about responsible pet ownership. We serve a 600 square mile area of northern Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. We do not have a shelter, but we try to take in all animals we can from the Village of Chama holding facility as well as strays and unwanted animals throughout our region. All rescued animals are fostered locally until they can be adopted or transferred to no- or low-kill shelters or rescues. In addition to rescue and foster, we support the following programs:• A low-cost spay-neuter program for community pet owners• An Angel Fund to help pet owners pay for unexpected veterinarian bills through a no-interest revolving loan• WAG ‘n READ - A Reading Education and Assistance Dogs® program that works in our local schools to strengthen the animal-human bond while enhancing the reading experience for children

Meet Shadow Surprise

Sweet Shadow Surprise was an outside kitty but wanted so bad to belong with someone that a woman who was feeding her was able to catch her and get her to us. She was spayed and vaccinated and put into a foster home where she earned her moniker of Shadow, as that was all that was seen of her for weeks. Then she started making overtures to her foster mom--fleeting, but sweet gestures. She was a bit hard to catch to take to vet for her follow-up vaccination, but by that evening was laying down watching TV with her foster mom. We think she will do best in a quiet home with few or no other animals, although she is ok with friendly quiet dogs. It will take her a little time to adjust, but she is a sweet girl who wants to be loved--just a bit of a scaredy cat. She is missing part of her tail, which may be part of the answer to why she is so skittish. Never attempts to scratch or bite, but she will hide! If you would love a loyal, quiet, sweet companion please consider Shadow Surprise!
