Black Cat Rescue

Black Cat Rescue is a No Kill cat rescue organization in Massachusetts. Our all-volunteer network of foster homes is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless black cats and kittens by providing quality foster care while actively seeking loving, permanent adoptive homes. As an organization, we work to improve the public image of both black cats and animal adoption by making black cat adoption a positive experience for all involved. We fully embrace the tenets of the No Kill movement. Our foster cats come from all over Massachusetts. We accept owner surrenders as well as strays directly off the streets or from local shelters and rescue organizations.

Meet Samantha

Samantha is a sweet tortie (DOB 2/24). About Samantha from her foster human:   How would you describe the cat's general personality?: Samantha is a very curious and sweet cat, who knows exactly what she likes and doesn’t like. When she wants pets and cuddles, she will rub herself on your hand to get the pets she wants! However, when she feels independent, she will make her feelings clear as well. If she is feeling curious, she will want to see what you are doing and may want to feel included. Does the cat enjoy being pet? Yes. Samantha enjoys pets and will even come to you for pets, but she also makes it clear when she does not want to be pet. If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? She best enjoys pets on her face, including the chin, top of her head, and cheeks. Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? She doesn’t like her back paws being touched as much. She doesn’t seem to like her back touched either. She will be ok with being touched but will get upset if you keep petting her in ways/places she doesn’t want to be touched. Does the cat come on your lap? She came to my lap once, and I haven’t seen her do that ever since. When I place her on my lap, she tolerates it for a few seconds and leaves. Does the cat like to be held? She doesn’t mind being held for a few seconds at a time, but after about 10 seconds, she will try to crawl out/jump out of your arms. Does the cat sleep in your bed? Samantha does not like to sleep in the bed with me. Most of the time, she is down to cuddling with me in the bed, but when the light goes out, she goes out of the bed to explore, stays awake through the night, or she sleeps on the couch. Does the cat seek your attention? Definitely. Samantha will do long meows when she wants attention, whether it be pets, food, or if she is curious to see what you are doing! However, sometimes, she can be an independent cat when she feels like hiding or sleeping. Does the cat like to play? Samantha doesn’t seem to be a big fan of playing, but she will play with you occasionally! What are the cat's favorite games and toys? She likes fishing rod toys. She tends to get scared of bigger toys, such as the ones that resemble a snake. How vocal is the cat? Pretty vocal. Samantha is most vocal when she wants attention, but she will also make sounds if she is surprised or if she is upset. What kinds of sounds does the cat make? Meows, purrs, chirps, whines, hissing (when she is upset) Does the cat scratch a scratcher? Yes. Samantha likes to use the scratcher. Does the cat always use the litter box? Yes. Samantha is very good about using the litter box. What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? She currently has dry food available all the time and gets fed wet food 3 times a day. Right now, Samantha is very skinny because she lost a lot of weight at the animal control, so I am trying to feed her as much as she will eat. Is the cat picky about food? She doesn’t seem to be too picky, but she definitely has likes and dislikes. She likes the flaky wet food with gravy. She seems to be picky with some flavors, which are brand-dependent. What is the cat's favorite treat? Samantha loves Churus and flaked/grilled tuna treats! However, apart from those treats, I have yet to find other treats she likes; she can be very picky with treats. Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? Yes, when you try to interact with/pet her when she wants to be left alone. Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? Yes, when you try to interact with/pet her when she wants to be left alone. Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? Yes, when you try to pet her when she wants to be left alone, or if she gets too stimulated while being pet. Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? She broke skin once, when I kept petting her after she didn’t want to be pet anymore. To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? Samantha will be fearful at first, and she will go into hiding. However, with time, she will come out and ask you for pets. She might be shy and afraid for a few days but will warm up to you with time. Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions? Samantha is curious and intelligent, and she will persevere to satisfy her curiosity! She figured out how to open most of my drawers and will open them for fun or hide inside the drawers when she wants alone space. One time, she got curious about what was outside the window and jumped straight into the glass and bumped her head! In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? If you want to adopt a loving cat full of gentle yet also sassy personality, Samantha is the perfect cat for you. She is the cutest when she asks for attention and pets, and will do silly things throughout the day to surprise you. She also needs some alone space and time, so if you are a working person, she will do fine on her own during the day. What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? Samantha seems to get scared and anxious easily. Although I thought she became pretty used to the environment after a few days of fostering her, she still becomes scared/cautious with I come back home, gets scared of noises from the coffee machine, washer, microwave, etc, and I think it will take time for her to get fully used to the environment.
