Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society

PAWS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving Philadelphia’s homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals. PAWS is Philadelphia's largest no-kill shelter and is working to make Philadelphia a city in which every healthy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home. Through its adoption locations, special events, and foster care network, PAWS finds loving homes for thousands of animals each year.In March 2010, PAWS opened a low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter and wellness clinic serving pet owners and rescues in an effort to keep pets healthy and reduce the homeless pet population. Located in the Grays Ferry section of the city, the Clinic serves pet owners who have difficulty affording or do not have access to basic veterinary care (sterilization, vaccinations, treatments for upper respiratory infections/parasites/fleas, etc.) and rescue organizations that need affordable spay/neuter surgery and basic veterinary care to carry out their lifesaving work. Support for PAWS funds lifesaving initiatives including adoption and foster care programs, spay/neuter surgeries, low-cost vaccinations, and other efforts, all of which help reduce and will ultimately eliminate the unnecessary killing of Philadelphia's animals. Donations to PAWS are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Meet Samie

Grumpy face, but a warm heart! Are you looking for a sweet older gentleman to be the center of your universe? Look no further! Samie is everything you are looking for. Don't let his quiet demeanor fool you. While shy at first, Samie opens up quickly and you'll find him to be extremely affectionate. He gently tries to climb you with his big fluffy paws, and demands to be picked up and put in your lap! Samie is not very vocal, but you will always hear his purrs whenever you enter the room.  Like most senior cats, Samie has a few health issues that an adopter should be aware of. He has a grade 3/4 out of 6 heart murmur. He would require a vet visit to rule out underlying heart disease like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or hyperthyroidism. There is also a chance his heart murmur is completely benign. His labwork shows a possibility for mild kidney disease. Right now he does not require a renal diet, but we would like the adopter to bring him either back here or to another vet to check his renal values in 2-3 months. When Samie came in our vet noted dental disease on the few teeth he had remaining. On December 20th he had some of those teeth removed. Lastly, due to Samie being a brachycephalic (smushed face) cat, he also has an underbite.  Despite the noted conditions, Samie is very laid back and easy to care for. He is not currently on any medication, and is incredibly tolerant with handling and grooming. This makes him the perfect match for an adopter of any experience! The foster has not noted any playful behavior during their time together, but would encourage the adopter to experiment with different types of play and enrichment! Samie would do great in a quiet home with kids of any age, as long as they are taught to be gentle with him due to his age. He has briefly met his foster mom's dog, and was not thrilled about it. He has not interacted with any cats to our knowledge. However, Samie would be able to live with other animals as long as a the adopters follow a very slow introduction schedule. As long as the adopter is able to shower Samie with affection whenever they are home, he will be content! Age: 11 years How I came to PAWS: Samie was at Philly's animal control when his foster, a Vet Tech at PAWS, fell in love and tagged him for our rescue! Animal ID#: A179056 I am not at the shelter. Please email my foster parent at [email protected] to learn more about me!
