Humane Society of Washington County, TN

The Appalachian Highlands Humane Society promotes Spay/Neuter. We pull animals from our local animal shelter and place them in foster care, give them any medical attention they need, spay/neuter prior to adoptions. We also, review craigslist on a daily basis and contact individuals listing "free" puppies, dogs, cats and kittens in an effort to get them to surrender to us and attempt to educate these individuals about spay/neuter and the danger of listing free animals. Along with our foster animals, we take animals currently residing in our local shelter to adoption events.

Meet Tonka

Meet Tonka! Tonka is a very special girl. She has a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia. What does that mean, you might wonder? Well, this is a condition in which the cerebellum of the brain fails to properly develop. Our cerebellum is responsible for helping us keep our balance, hand-eye coordination, and controls our fine motor skills. Given that Tonka's has not properly developed, this means she is wobbly and uncoordinated. Please don't worry, as she is not in any pain. This is not a painful condition, nor is it contagious to other animals.    Tonka is in a loving foster home that supports her every step of the way, and we are finding that she is a very resilient girl capable of overcoming any obstacles in her way. Though this is an untreatable condition, she is thriving. She is clumsy, yes, but she is expected to live a pretty normal life as long as she is provided a little extra TLC. Things like elevated food bowls, rugs and carpeting to assist with grip and traction, and moving items that she could easily fall from or trip over really help her out.    Tonka is 1.5 years old and has been spayed, vaccinated, combo tested (negative), dewormed, microchipped, and is on monthly flea prevention. She is a very sweet, loving cat that enjoys snuggles and hanging out on the couch with you watching TV.  Although experience with "CH cats" will not be required for adoption, we will be very particular as to which family she goes to. We want to make sure her future family does all the proper research and are committed to and ready for such a special cat.    If interested in learning more, email [email protected] or complete an adoption application on our website at ahhumanesociety.org.

Adoption Process
$50.00 for cats and kittens, dogs range from $150.00 to $275.00. We have adoption applications and contracts for potential adopters to complete. Vet references are checked and home visits on some animals are required.
