Husky Corgi Mix Origins

The Siberian husky and the Cardigan or Pembroke Welsh Corgi are breeds known to work and herd, with the Pembroke and Cardigan being used in the breeding process. Being a descendant of these two breeds, the Horgi is also reliable for herding. The Cardigan, as well as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, are among Britain’s oldest breeds of dogs, dating back several centuries. The very first Pembroke was brought to the US sometime in 1933 by an American breeder.

On the other hand, Huskies are descendants of ancient Taymyr wolves. Huskies became popular after being imported to Alaska towards the end of the last century to serve as sled dogs during the Gold Rush. But most of the Siberian Huskies in the US nowadays came from those which were brought from Siberia sometime in the 1930s.

Corgi Husky Puppies

While the Siberian husky and Welsh Corgi, are considered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as part of the elite club of dog breeds, the Horgi remains to be less regarded by the kennel club. The Corgi as a breed was classified by AKC in 1935 under the “herding” category which meant that this fur baby is recognized as a vigilant guardian and a faithful and easy-to-train pooch with a “big” bark.

In 1930, the AKC also categorized the Siberian husky under the “working” category. They described this breed as gentle, friendly, alert, dignified, and non-threatening which makes them ideal as a family dog.

Husky Corgi Looks

The Husky Corgi’s small frame makes it a cute and tiny version of a Husky. It sometimes has a grey and white coat with black accents and the long, curled tail that we see among Siberian Huskies, in contrast to the short legs that it acquired from the Welsh Corgi. Among the other features that you can expect to see from your Husky Corgi are the following:

  • Head, which appears and looks like a fox;
  • Skull, which is wide and flat in the middle of the ear (with the occiput distance greater than the distance above the Horgi’s nose center);
  • Eyes, which are almond-shaped;
  • Ears, which are mostly upright;
  • Forequarters, with the moderately broad chest tapering to a deep brisket and is well-let down between the Horgi’s forelegs. The dog is generally heavy for its size because of its bones, but is still not too heavy to be less agile;
  • Hindquarters, which should have moderate angulation at stifle and hock. Generally, the Horgi’s hindquarters must display enough power to propel itself efficiently over rough terrain despite being a low, relatively heavy, herding dog.
  • Neck, which is long enough to provide itself maximum balance. The Horgi’s shoulders have slight bulging and are clean and well-blended between;
  • Body, with the rib cage growing well;
  • Topline, which is firm and level and with a small depression behind the shoulder to allow reduction of the body coat caused by its heavy neck coat.

Husky and Corgi Size

Those who prefer a small to medium-sized fur baby would love to own Corgi Husky Mix. Like its Corgi parent, the Horgi is set rather low to the ground due to its compact size. It is approximately 13 to 15 inches in height which makes it look sturdy and stable due to its short legs. A full-grown Horgi is typically 20-50 pounds, making it a good alternative for those who feel they cannot manage a purebred Siberian Husky’s size.

Corgi and Husky Color

Mixing dog breeds can be very unpredictable especially with the resulting traits that puppies of crossbreeds may exhibit. This goes for the fur color of the pups, with some being born with a mix of their parent breeds’ characteristics, and others taking after one parent breed.

Horgi pups may have red, sable, fawn, or tan coat from their Corgi lineage, or grey, black, or agouti color from their Siberian Husky lineage. A Husky “mask” may also be observed, as well as, white markings that characterize both Siberian Husky and Corgi parents.

Corgi Mixed with Husky Personality

The Horgi is known to be loyal and beautiful much like their pure breed parents. They have a sweet temperament, aside from their unique, loyal and intelligent characteristics. When you do decide to own a Horgi, it may turn out to be a perfect pet parent-fur baby match. Usually becoming a family dog, the Horgi is very friendly and may not make a good watchdog as they are less threatening to strangers.

 Husky Corgi Mix Temperament

Designer dogs also have unpredictable temperaments because they may exhibit either attribute of their parent breeds. Here are some of the things you can consider with a Husky and Corgi mix:

  • Friendly, but not over-friendly. It relates well even with strangers because of its trusting nature.
  • A Horgi is a social creature that endears people and kids. It mingles well with other animals and loves the attention given to it by its pet parent.
  • Gets along with the family. The Corgi and Husky mix is a match made in heaven, making the Horgi an ideal family dog. Its sociable nature makes it a pack animal. The Horgi is suitable for young families especially when trained well.
  • Always on an alert. It may not really fit well as a watchdog, but the Corgi Husky Mix is alert enough to make it a good guard dog. When properly trained, the Horgi can be made to bark excessively.
  • The Horgi is loving and loyal and puts its owner before itself. It will do anything to please and entertain its pet parent.
  • The Corgi Husky Mix inherited the intelligent traits of its Welsh Corgi and Siberian Husky parents. It is easy to train because it catches onto things rather easily.
  • A Horgi can be an eager beaver! It is always eager for new adventures.
  • The Corgi Husky MIx is an amazing companion which can fulfill any pet parents’ emotional needs.

Husky Mixed With Corgi Grooming

Corgi husky puppies take on their Corgis and Husky parents when it comes to shedding. A Horgi will require extensive grooming at least once or twice a day, especially during the shedding season. Having a Horgi in your home will make you vacuum more than usual to manage its shedding. You will also need to regularly brush it, preferably daily. For those who suffer asthma, the Horgi is not a recommended pet.

Horgi also needs to be bathed properly. Standard maintenance includes the use of shampoo only when they are really dirty. Its nails must be regularly and properly trimmed, and the ears and teeth cleaned two or three times a week.

A good dog shampoo and consider must be used when giving a Corgi Husky Mix a bath to achieve a shiny, soft, and healthy coat. Bathing a Horgi can be very challenging as its coat is resistant to water. Drying will also be difficult when the coat is too wet.

Any dog will feel uncomfortable when its nails are not trimmed regularly and gets too long. To avoid hurting a Horgi during walks, you may need to trim the nails. Take care to cut the nails appropriately since these have vessels and nerves running through. Cutting too much may end up hurting the dog, causing its paws to bleed. If you find it difficult to trim the nails of your Horgi, better bring it to an expert dog groomer.

The Horgi’s ears must also be checked regularly by wiping them clean with a moist cotton ball daily. Meanwhile, the teeth may be cleaned using dog paste or a baking soda and water paste twice every week. You may also use a child’s soft toothbrush, a gauze pad or a piece of nylon stocking stretched over your finger to clean the Horgi’s teeth. Cleaning the teeth minimizes the spread of infection to the rest of the dog’s body due to licking itself.

Corgi Husky Mix Health Problems

A Corgi Husky Mix may be born with or eventually develop common ailments like any other dog born of a parent with the same ailments. Among the health problems, Horgi’s exhibit includes skin, eye and back problems, as well as, more severe ailments such as epilepsy, DM, PDA, Von Willebrand’s Disease, obesity, and hip dysplasia. That is why it is important to check with dog breeders for proof that the Horgi’s parents are tested for these ailments. Otherwise, just hope that this mix breed does not suffer the same genetic ailments that their purebred parents are often prone to.

Pet owners should watch out for the Horgi’s weight gain since it is prone to gaining quite easily. It should not become extremely overweight or obese to avoid it experiencing a back problem.

Get your Horgi vaccinated to help it live a long and healthy life. Horgi pups should be vaccinated between its 8th and 10th week after being born. A booster should be given 12 months after its first vaccination.

A mixed-breed puppy like a Horgi can be expected to live about as long as its Corgi and Husky parents, which is about 12 to 15 years.

Corgi Husky Mix Food

A Corgi Husky Mix is a designer breed, so its pet parent should be mindful of this fur baby’s recommended daily caloric intake which is dependent on its size. A veterinarian may be consulted so that you will have a more informed idea of how much calories you should feed your Horgi. You should ask the vet for the right estimate of your Horgi’s size, activity level, and ideal weight range to guide you in its diet. That way, you avoid underfeeding or overfeeding your pooch!

Even the treats you give your Horgi must also be considered. There should be about 80% calories from the kibble, and 20% calories from the treats and other food. Olives, tuna, and sunflower seeds can make good treats for your pet. You can also buy from pet shops brand of treats good for a small to a medium dog like a Horgi

With a Horgi’s healthy appetite, it can really gain weight when left to over-eat. It is recommended that the feeding hours of your Horgi be preset and not allow your fur baby to eat whenever it wants. You can give it treats but watch out for its dies because the additional weight may lead the Horgi to experience back-related issues. Daily exercise in the form of adequate walks and playtime is also important for your little friend to keep its muscles and weight in check. Being conscious of your Horgi’s lifestyle is a sure-fire way to give it more chances to live a longer life.

Husky Corgi Mix Exercise Requirements

Corgi husky mix facts

Although corgis and huskies are genetically designed to engage in a highly active lifestyle in the form of chasing and pulling, they may not necessarily be genetically predisposed to very long walks and daily playtime. Corgis and Huskies are more sedentary these days that is why they are more prone to obesity. As a responsible pet parent, you need to fight off the temptation to spoil them with more treats.

A moderate activity throughout the day is enough to keep your Horgi healthy and happy. When it experiences low activity such as fewer walks and less playtime, your furry friend may exhibit crankiness and poor behavior. A leash break can also be helpful to give it some time to wander around freely and possibly interact with other dogs, or just to engage in solitary play.

Corgi Husky Training

Corgi husky mix facts

Training a dog is a very challenging task and is not an easy feat for the faint of heart. Novice dog owners may have to consider the Horgi’s temperament especially when it exhibits its husky side. Huskies are known to demand strong leadership from their owner, thus, firmness, positivity, and consistency must be shown to them for best results.

Conditioning through repetition is a necessary component for training your Horgi. This does not necessarily mean that it is a slow learner. It could be that your Horgi is just stubborn.

Your pet Horgi may tend to corral animals and humans alike which is indicative of its “herding” nature. In this situation, you may need to be firm during training. A gentle and consistent approach coupled with rewards may also prove to be effective.

Behavioral training. Some of the more common behavioral issues that pet owners must consider include barking, aggression, food guarding, howling, mouthing and chewing, separation anxiety. Behavioral training will be helpful for these issues.

Obedience training. One of the basic and most important training for any dog is obedience training. Among the methods of training that can be used with a corgi husky mix, are the core obedience commands come, sit, stay, heel, and down.

Housebreaking training. An effective way to train your Horgi puppy on housebreaking is always to let it be with you in the same room, so you can keep an eye on it.

Crate training. Don’t have the mistaken notion that crate training is cruel. Some vets recommend that a crate be used for your Horgi while it’s young. Make sure that the crate is very comfortable and allows for good air to flow and a good amount of light to pass through it so that your dog is accustomed to the crate.

Training your Horgi and teaching them to socialize at a young age is good for both the dog and its owner. Patiently training it will be rewarding as it will more likely be in its best behavior.

Husky Corgi And Families

Corgi husky mix facts

Horgis are playful and friendly dogs making them ideal as family dogs. They are sweet and sociable, and kids would really love playing with them. Their size makes them perfect even in adequately-sized apartments.

Being an easygoing and flexible breed, the corgi husky mix is adaptable to a variety of living conditions since they are not easily affected by a specific weather condition to survive.

Care is necessary when trying to train corgi husky mix to be less aggressive towards people. Its playful, energetic, and affectionate nature make it an adorable playmate for kids and adults.

Corgi and Husky Mix Price
