Paws Up! Dog Food Recall Alert
Paws Up!, supplied by Masters Best Friend, has issued a voluntary recall for their pig ear dog treats as of September 29, 2020. The affected products are potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Several other dog foods were also recalled for Salmonella contamination in 2020 as well including Albright’, Sunshine Mills, Billy+Margot, Nature’s menu, and Aunt Jeni’s Home Made.ย
Which Paws Up! Products Are Under Recall?
The treats currently being recalled are the Paws Up! pig ear dog treats by Masters Best Friend.
Why Were The Treats Recalled?
Paws Up! proceeded with the recall due to potential salmonella contamination. The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently investigating an outbreak of Salmonella in humans.
Based on current findings, it is likely that exposure to the pig ears caused the illness. Some people reported falling ill after feeding the treats to their dogs. Three individuals have been hospitalized, and one has passed away.
Salmonella poisoning can be spread to other animals and humans and can cause acute illness in both.
Where Were The Affected Treats Sold?
The affected pig ears were sold across Canada at Canadian Tire and Save on Foods locations. The treats have since been removed from the shelves.
What Do I Do With The Treats? Should I Be Worried About Myself or My Dog?
If your pet has been eating the recalled Paws Up! pig ear dog treats, discontinue use immediately. Due to potential adverse reactions in dogs of any size, if you have been feeding your pet the potentially contaminated product, contact your veterinarian to ensure they know the situation. Then return the food to the original purchase location for a full refund. Proceed with sanitizing any food scoops, bowls, feeding toys, or storage containers that may have contained the food at one time.
If you have handled the affected dog treats mentioned above, keep an eye out for potential symptoms of Salmonella poisoning. The symptoms in humans may include abdominal cramping, chills, diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms after coming into contact with the contaminated treats, contact your health care provider immediately.
What Do I Need To Know About Salmonella Poisoning?
Salmonella poisoning in dogs may come with various symptoms such as lethargy with fever, diarrhea occasionally accompanied by blood, and vomiting. Other less noticeable side effects can include appetite loss, abdominal pain, and fever.
If your animal has become infected but appears to be otherwise healthy, they can still be carriers of Salmonella. That means they can potentially infect other animals and humans they are around. So, you should always wash your hands after handling edible pet products such as food and treats to be safe.
If you know your pet has consumed the recalled product or is currently experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.

80% of Dogs Develop Arthritis or Joint Pain by 7 Years old – Here’s How to Protect Them
Most of us train our dogs when they are puppies to jump up on furniture.ย We think it’s harmless (and easier than always lifting them), but for dogs, couches and beds are very high compared to the size of their bodies.
Every time they jump it compresses their back and applies enormous force to their joints.
It’s no wonder that an incredible 80% of dogs experience arthritis or joint pain by only 7 years old.
Luckily, there is a vet-recommended solution.
It’s the PawRamp by Alpha Paw. An adjustable ramp that allows dogs to safely get on and off couches and beds. PawRamp makes joining you in bed or on the couch effortless and fun.
As a bonus, you can use code SAVE35 to get $35 off the PawRamp today.
