Meet Blake Shelton
This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, January 28th unless he/she is adopted prior to the event with a set up home. The event is from 12 pm to 3 pm at Palo Alto's Pet Food Express. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption fee: $1000 Blake Shelton is a 3-4 year old Standard Poodle that was surrendered to DPS by a breeder who shut down their operations and asked for our help in placing their dogs. Blake is a winner of a pup: smart, friendly, and beautiful! Here is the report from his foster home. It has been so wonderful fostering Blake Shelton! We are learning new things about him every day, but so far he has been a very good boy, the gentlest giant ever! Since he is so calm and mellow, we thought he was much older, but we were surprised to hear that he is only 3-4 yo! We get up around 7 in the morning and we usually let him out to go potty outside in our backyard. Sometimes he goes right away, but sometimes even if we wait for more than 15 minutes, he doesn’t go potty at all. He follows us or lounges close by as the kids get ready for school. At around 8am, we go for a 40min to 1hr walk in the neighborhood. After every walk, we use a damp towel and wipe down his body and his paws (especially around his face since he has very fluffy hair, lots of tiny leaves get stuck!) which he seems to enjoy. He has 3/4 cup of kibble for breakfast after the morning walk (when we give more than that he leaves his food- which maybe be a little more than he wants). He is super chill and lounges most of the day until the kids get back from school around 3pm. He doesn’t ask to go for potty breaks so most of the time he doesn’t need to go outside until the kids get home, which is when we take him for another long walk. We brush him daily usually after the afternoon walk, while we watch tv. He has dinner around 6, lounges some more till around 9 when we take him out for his last short walk for potty around the neighborhood. He likes to stay close and nap (and have dreams!) until we go to bed around 11 or 12, then we let him in his crate where he sleeps through the night. He has been the most chill dog! He is a very big boy but he has been so calm and quiet. He’s most excited when he greets us in the morning, but he won't jump on us or run around the house. He was nervous the first night he arrived, but the next day, we could tell he was much more relaxed and settled in, lounging and sunbathing close by. At first, he followed us from room to room, but as he got more comfortable with us, while he still likes to stay close, he will sometimes stay in the other room on his bed as long as he can sense our presence. He hasn’t played off-leash with other dogs during his stay with us, but we meet a lot of dogs during our walk and he has been very gentle with all of them. He isn’t the social playful energetic type, but more of a chill and relaxed boy. He has never barked to other dogs rather just sniff and say hello, but after a while he will just wait patiently until the humans are done talking. He can be shy with strangers initially so he sometimes hides behind us but his giant body would be too big for him to hide! He is very big but has been super easy to walk! To be honest, we were worried if we would be able to control him, but boy were we wrong! He is so gentle and so far, he hasn’t given us any problems during our walks. He doesn’t pull to go in front, but rather, he sometimes will stop and try to stay behind and sniff his spot. He can be super strong if he wants to be since he is such a big boy, but he hasn’t given us any problems! He does like squirrels if he finds them running around, but if you tug and tell him to “leave it” he will not go after them. He is still learning about the world of living in a family home, so can be startled by little things like vacuums, music from kids practicing their instruments, or trucks driving by, etc. After being introduced to many sounds now, we can tell he is getting more and more used to different sounds already. You can get a lot of his cute head-tilts with so many things around the house, like buttons on a microwave, sharpening a pencil or even singing a Disney song! He hasn’t chewed on anything around the house, even his own toys. He isn’t very interested in them, but this might change in time. He does like bully sticks and finishes them quickly! But since he usually lounges, he doesn’t need a lot to entertain him. He has had zero accidents in the house. So smart! We can leave him alone for a couple of hours in his crate with no problems. He sometimes whines for a little while at first but winds down pretty quickly. We also put him in his crate for a short period of time while we are in the house, but he stays quietly and waits patiently until he is let out. We even had a plumber come in the house one time, but he barked once or twice and calmed down quickly and stayed quiet in his crate even with a lot of noise from people constantly going in and out and with loud machines operating nearby. He could be the only dog in the house since he is very calm and doesn’t really need a play buddy, but we also think he will do well with other calm relaxed dogs like him. He is the very definition of a “gentle giant”! If you love big dogs but unsure if you can control him, he is your guy. He is a quick learner and a very gentle, super smart and obedient dog, plus you have no worries of crate/house training yourself for this big boy! Blake is only an option for a home with prior dog experience. He is an option for kids over the age of 6 who are knock-over-proof.
