Doggie Protective Services

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization based in So. CA who has established chapters outside of the area to attempt to place more of the dogs that are dying in the shelters in So. CA. Many areas do not have small breed dogs and we transport and meet with potential adopters because So. CA is deluged in small breed dogs.

Meet Italia: Puglia

This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, May 6th unless he/she is adopted prior to the event with a set up home. The event is from 12 pm to 3 pm at Palo Alto's Pet Food Express. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption fee: $800   Italia's puppies are 8 weeks old as of May 6th. They were born in our rescue to Mama Italia, a purebred Mini Schnauzer with a fabulous personality. Italia came into our rescue with another purebred Mini Schnauzer (Aqua) and her babies look like purebreds, but since we do not know dad, we can't be sure. The puppies all look practically identical and are incredibly adorable!  These sweet mini schnauzer mixes were born and raised in foster so they have been incredibly well socialized to humans and household sounds. Their routine is as follows - they wake up around 7am but we leave them in their pen to play until 8:30am (while we sleep in!). We leave a bowl of dry food for them overnight because it minimizes morning whining. If it's empty they get breakfast first thing. When the weather is nice, they spend the day playing and napping in our backyard pen while we take work calls nearby. They get lunch (a can of wet food) at 12pm followed by dinner around 6:30pm. We bring them in at sunset and they go to bed around 8pm with a bowl of kibble.   All of the puppies love people and are very cuddly. They've been our quietest litter so far and are fairly independent (though all of them would prefer to be with us humans than in their pen!). They are absolutely fearless and love to explore. They are not at all startled or intimidated by new sounds, new people, or new objects. They're super social and outgoing little pups!   Cinque (F) - the sweetest puppy of the bunch and last born. When the crate door or puppy gate opens, all the other puppies bolt out but Cinque remains behind to see what's going to happen. She is the cuddliest of the bunch and very mellow. She's the smallest one and is usually on the bottom of the puppy pile. She's not timid or shy though! Just thoughtful. Milano (M) - The chunkiest monkey of the bunch. He's the most talkative puppy who loves to be with his humans. He loves being petted and is happy to follow us around wherever we are. He's the only puppy who prefers human company over puppy playtime. Puglia (M) - He LOVES sticks and toys! In our backyard pen, he's always the first one to find something to chew on. His second favorite thing is shoe laces. Like the other puppies, he loves cuddles and often sleeps in my lap while I take meetings. He's the silliest guy too - his favorite place to sit is inside a cardboard box. Every object is a new play-thing in the making!   Roma (M) - First born and boldest of the group! After the puppies travel in a crate, he's always the first one ready to bolt out when the door opens. He LOVES nibbling on shoelaces and isn't afraid of a single thing. He's a very cuddly kind of guy who wants to be where the action is.   Siena (F) - She's the sweetest girl and was the first puppy to discover belly rubs! When we walk over to the pen, she often immediately flops over for scratches. She's confident but on the calmer side. She's also a model: if you look at her, she will stop, look back at you, and POSE. If you're looking for a dog to start in your Instagram and collect followers, she's your gal!   The puppies are only an option for a home that has owned a dog in the last 5 years. If there are children, they should be over the age of 5.

Adoption Process
We require an application from anyone who is interested in adopting. Then we require a phone interview, followed by a meeting in person. Then if the animal is a match, we have a contract and our adoption fee which is $400.
