Chama Valley Humane Society

Founded in 1998, the Chama Valley Humane Society is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization supported entirely through fundraising, private donations, and grants. Our mission is to provide no-kill solutions to reduce the population of homeless cats and dogs by sponsoring a spay and neuter program for companion pets and feral cats, working with regional shelters and foster homes to rehabilitate and rehome animals, and educating those in the community we serve about responsible pet ownership. We serve a 600 square mile area of northern Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. We do not have a shelter, but we try to take in all animals we can from the Village of Chama holding facility as well as strays and unwanted animals throughout our region. All rescued animals are fostered locally until they can be adopted or transferred to no- or low-kill shelters or rescues. In addition to rescue and foster, we support the following programs:• A low-cost spay-neuter program for community pet owners• An Angel Fund to help pet owners pay for unexpected veterinarian bills through a no-interest revolving loan• WAG ‘n READ - A Reading Education and Assistance Dogs® program that works in our local schools to strengthen the animal-human bond while enhancing the reading experience for children

Meet Emmy

COURTESY POST: Please call Tracy at 505-901-1378 for more information or to meet Emmy. Emmy is a Boxer/Pittie mix whose owners can no longer take care of her. She is about 6 years old and loves to run and play tug-of-war, but they can't play these days. For her first two years with her original owner, she was left crated constantly and not well-socialized. She is still afraid of crates and anything that looks like a crate. Then she was in a series of shelters before being adopted from Los Alamos shelter about three years ago by her current family. Emmy loves people, including children. When she greets a new person she curls her lip and tucks her tail to show her submissiveness, but some people don't get this and are afraid of her at first. She likes to talk to people she knows and also likes to keep the wild animals away from her people and house. Emmy is housebroken and lets you know she needs out by getting fidgety. She will be sad to leave her owners, but has many good years left and will be a joy to the right family. If you have other animals, it will be best to schedule a meet and greet with current owners as Emmy has been an only for the last few years. She is not a dominant dog, so should do well with most dogs once she gets to know them.
