Barkville Dog Rescue

BarkVille Dog Rescue, formerly known as BarkTown Dog Rescue & Sanctuary, is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization committed to saving dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages. We are a non-breed specific rescue, and we do not exclude dogs due to extensive medical needs. Our goal is to save dogs in the most need of rescue assistance, including older dogs, medically challenged dogs, and PitBull Terrier type dogs. We work with our friends and donors to raise the funds necessary to provide life-saving treatments for the dogs we rescue and to identify the best foster situations for the dogs in our care.Dogs in our care are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment needed prior to adoption. Our dogs are then placed in a nurturing foster home while they await placement into their permanent home. Our group remains interested in and committed to the welfare of our dogs beyond the adoption process. Our goal is to help dogs in distress without regard to age, breed, size, or ease of placement. To the extent our finances allow, dogs in the greatest need take priority. Our cost to provide basic veterinary care to a dog is about $300 and covers all necessary vaccines, spay/neuter and microchip. If the dog tests positive for Heartworm disease (as many of our GA stray dogs do), the additional cost to treat heartworms is approximately $500-$600. For dogs with injuries requiring specialized treatment and/or surgery, costs can easily increase into the thousands. When BarkVille becomes aware of a dog in need, we immediately get to work posting the dog on our social media platforms and networking with our internet friends & partners to make people aware of the dog’s situation. We raise funds and solicit for fosters, and once we have both, we transport the dog to one our partner vets as quickly as possible. We strive to work with area shelters and other rescue groups to develop a network of supporters and volunteers to create a better world for homeless dogs.

Meet Holt

HOLT is a beautiful, affectionate, senior Shepherd mix who is about 9 years old and weighs 60 lbs. In June of 2024, this super sweet senior was found wandering alone & afraid on Holt Rd (hence the name) in Fayette County, GA. He was terrified & confused and his rescuers thought maybe he had somehow ended up on the street after being owned by an elderly person who passed away. Once at the shelter, the amazing Fayette County AC staff & volunteers spent 2 months gaining HOLT's trust enough so that he could relax & be fully vetted/neutered. In September of 2024, once HOLT was completely healthy & felt safe being around new people, BarkVille Dog Rescue was able to pull him from the shelter and place him in one of their amazing foster homes. Here's what HOLT's foster family has to say about HOLT ... "HOLT is the most loving, loyal, gentle companion a family could ask for. He LOVES being with his people and he thrives in a calm, quiet, stable home. His needs are minimal and he is a super easy keeper. We think there's a chance that his eyesight and possibly his hearing may be limited. He appears to have mapped routes for himself throughout our home that he likes to travel daily and that he prefers not to stray from. He will not, under any circumstances, go up or down any of the carpeted stairs inside our house, but he easily goes up & down the deck stairs into our backyard. He enjoys being out in the fenced yard where he feels safe and happily walks freely to relieve himself. He has never once had an accident in our home and he has proven himself to be a very unlikely flight risk as he only likes to travel familiar routes with his person by his side (he is sometimes too nervous to move until his foster mom puts a slip lead on him & encourages him to move forward with her). He does not like to go for walks or even go down his driveway to the sidewalk, preferring to stay near the garage and the yard that's familiar to him. He knows when meal times are approaching every day and he positions himself in the same spot in the kitchen where he proceeds to do his happy/spinny celebration dance until his food is placed down on the floor for him! He peacefully coexists with the 3 personal dogs in his foster home, but his ideal situation may be as an only dog unless the adopter's dogs are calm, stable, obedient dogs who will not engage if HOLT accidentally steps on them or walks into them. Slow introductions with other dogs will definitely be required until HOLT feels completely safe in his new environment and his canine companions recognize his limitations and do not feel threatened by him in their space. HOLT LOVES to tool around town with his foster mom in her minivan! He is a polite, quiet, perfect gentleman in the car, and will happily run errands with you all day as long as you don't ask him to get out of the car until you're back home in your garage where he feels safe! This boy is the real deal and is the absolute epitome of "man's best friend." He may be a senior, but he is in good health and with the appropriate love & attention could easily have another 4-6 really good years ahead of him. If you live a quiet, simple life and can appreciate the gentle, loving, kindness of an amazing companion dog, then there is a very good chance that HOLT is the dog for you!" If you have additional questions about HOLT or would like to meet this very special boy, please email us at [email protected] or submit an application for him at https://www.barkvilledogrescue.org/applications. BarkVille is located in Roswell, GA and our dogs are available for foster/adoption in the Greater Atlanta area. Applicants in surrounding states could potentially adopt a BarkVille dog if their application is approved, they live within 2-3 hours of the Greater Atlanta area, and they are able to pick up their dog from the foster home.

Adoption Process
All of our dog posted for adoption are fully vetted which includes: Age appropriate vaccines (DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella), spay/neutered/microchipped. All adopters must complete an application, reference checks, and home check. Adoption fee is $300.00. Senior dogs are $250.00.
