Southern Comfort Animal Rescue

Southern Comfort Animal Rescue, Inc. is 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that rescues and rehomes abused, unwanted and abandoned companion animals.Southern Comfort was founded in 2001 in Savannah, Georgia, to provide shelter and find temporary foster or permanent homes for pets left behind when troops in nearby Ft. Stewart's 3rd Infantry Division shipped out to Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2006, the organization moved to Glenwood, Georgia. Southern Comfort fills a critical need in Wheeler County, which has no other rescues or animal control. We specialize in physical, social and emotional rehabilitation of our rescues. All animals are examined, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and receive any and all medical treatment before being placed in carefully screened forever homes.Southern Comfort is a "no-kill" rescue and only euthanizes in cases of irremediable suffering or vicious and dangerous animals. We also work to raise public awareness of the plight of homeless animals and promote the benefits of adopting an animal in need through community outreach and education.

Meet Nellie

Nellie has been living in a household with 4 cats since the age of 10 weeks. Nellie is an active, very happy, tail wagging girl who loves to run and retrieve sticks and toys. She responds to commands of sit, stay, down, shake, turn, drop it/out. Nellie is a high energy girl with stamina to run for long stretches but can also chill on the couch later in the evening when the daily routine winds down. Her temperament is gentle and she enjoys the company of cats and other dogs, large and small. She is very social and loves visitors. Nellie is working on not jumping up when she greets new people but it's always out of the excitement of meeting new faces. She has never growled or displayed any signs of aggression towards people or other animals. Nellie has been off leash on a large property with the security of an e-collar but always under close supervision. She has not demonstrated any flight behavior and has been good about recall with the aid of the collar. Having lived with Nellie for the better part of the year, my belief  is she would thrive in the company of other dogs or someone who would enjoy sharing a long run or hike with her. My college aged son has taken her on extended runs and she has the energy to mirror him. Nellie loves nose boops and to place her paw on her humans and share hugs and kisses. —————————- Nellie and her nine siblings were found in a man's yard while he was out of town. The puppies were approximately 6 weeks old. The owner of the land advised the employee who found them to get rid of them or else! Though SOCO rescue was at capacity, we were able to find a foster to save the puppies from their impending doom.  Nellie and her siblings are very playful puppies. As most Labradors are, Nellie is smart and has a warm, friendly temperament. Nellie has been well socialized and would thrive as a single companion or in a multiple dog household.

Adoption Process
