Southern Comfort Animal Rescue

Southern Comfort Animal Rescue, Inc. is 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that rescues and rehomes abused, unwanted and abandoned companion animals.Southern Comfort was founded in 2001 in Savannah, Georgia, to provide shelter and find temporary foster or permanent homes for pets left behind when troops in nearby Ft. Stewart's 3rd Infantry Division shipped out to Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2006, the organization moved to Glenwood, Georgia. Southern Comfort fills a critical need in Wheeler County, which has no other rescues or animal control. We specialize in physical, social and emotional rehabilitation of our rescues. All animals are examined, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and receive any and all medical treatment before being placed in carefully screened forever homes.Southern Comfort is a "no-kill" rescue and only euthanizes in cases of irremediable suffering or vicious and dangerous animals. We also work to raise public awareness of the plight of homeless animals and promote the benefits of adopting an animal in need through community outreach and education.

Meet Kirby

***Kirby will be available for adoption at the Tractor Supply in Ringoes, NJ over the Nov. 16-17 weekend. An application for his adoption should be submitted at socorescue.com (no need to "Register" or "Login"). Questions about Kirby and/or our adoption policy should be sent to [email protected]; please do not call the shelter's number.***   After a Glenwood family's home was damaged due to Hurricane Helene, they reached out to SoCo Rescue seeking help in re-homing the dogs that they had. Initially they stated that they had 20 dogs, but that number soared to 28 dogs once Scott Bennett arrived to the house. Most of the dogs, which ranged in ages from 2 months to 4 years old, suffered major hair loss due to flea and mite infestation. The worst were the five little puppies who were missing all of their fur, having open, bloody wounds from constant scratching and very anemic. Scott knew if them then they would most likely perish so he took them to SoCo Rescue and immediately began their care. While they haven't regrown all of their fur, the pups are looking and feeling much better and should make a full recovery.    Being the smallest of this litter doesn't stop Kirby from holding his own when playing with his larger siblings. This little fellow is full of affection and determination to find a home that can give him all of the love that he deserves. He will do best in a home with children who know how to handle a very small dog.   Kirby has received 2 of his 3 first year vaccinations as well as his rabies and Bordetella vaccinations. He's also been de-wormed, treated for parasites and started on his monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. He will require grooming on a regular basis. We strongly suggest keeping him on Nexgard flea/tick preventative for at least the first 6 months of life then switching to Bravecto as both of those products work very well in treating a number of skin issues. Kirby's adopter must agree to having him neutered once he reaches 6 months of age and providing verification of such to our rescue. Kirby will require all of his basic training. He is accustomed to being in a crate as well.

Adoption Process
we have an adoption questionnaire as well as a contract. The only fees we charge are those we are charged for the animal (vet fees)
