Meet MeeMaw

MeeMaw is our new senior pup at Safe Haven - and we are all IN LOVE with this special girl!MeeMaw originally came into the Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control shelter in early February as a stray and this is where she got her awesome name!  She really pulled at our heartstrings and when the shelter asked us for help, we just couldn't say no to MeeMaw!  She is estimated to be around 8 years, so on the early edge of her "senior years" and still has a fun zest for life yet ........ just like all the Golden Girls!  We actually think MeeMaw is a classic "Golden Girl" grandma,  but haven't quite figured out yet if she is the sweet goofy Rose, the fun-loving spontaneous Southern Belle Blanche, the intelligent quick-witted Dorothy, or the spicy matriarch Sophia!!! MeeMaw is now spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventatives.  The shelter staff in Cedar Rapids guessed that she is an American Bulldog/Lab mix due to her large size - as she currently weighs 91 pounds. During her intake exam the veterinarian did find MeeMaw to be deaf, and at times seems like she may have a little vision impairment too, as well as a double ear infection and possible allergies.  Luckily the treatment she received at the Cedar Rapids shelter seems to be helping.  She s looking much better and her ear infection has resolved - but regular ear cleaning will be helpful to keep her ears comfortable and healthy.  We are happy to report that she rode well in the car, and while she does get excited and pull on the leash when walking inside the building - she does much better once outside and especially if wearing a harness on long walks where she can actually be quite a pleasant companion!*** MeeMaw has a volunteer that loves her dearly and also has a deaf dog at home already - so she wants to sponsor the adoption of MeeMaw and will even help donate towards her yearly vetting next year!!! ***After MeeMaw gets settled into Safe Haven we will be dog and cat testing her to help us figure out what type of home will be best for her.  We will also have some tips and a book for MeeMaw's adopter that explain how to successfully care for a deaf dog.  Interested in adopting this pet?
