Ninna's Road to Rescue

I, Ninna Lopez, have been in rescue since 2007, managing a large no-kill shelter before starting Ninna's Road to Rescue in 2012. We have rescued and rehomed 1000's of animals. Our facility is climate controlled and the animals stay indoors at night in specially designed doggy rooms. They have access to the outdoors during the day in a large fenced in area. It's a little bit of paradise for the dogs until they find their furever home.

Meet Spike

30 day foster-to-adopt! (We are looking for a 30 day foster-to-adopt applicant. In other words, we are looking for applicants who want to adopt him without the commitment in the beginning.  On or before 30 days, we will require a commitment one way or another. If, during the 30 day foster period, it is not working out… Spike can come back to us, no strings attached.) Video link: https://youtu.be/rGzo_fKyjC8 FOR ADOPTION! Note: Only those with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. (For more pics, visit nr2r.petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org) INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY: PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying: DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Spike (male) Intake date:  10/6/2022 Chihuahua 3 years old 7.7 pounds Adoption fee:  $adoption fee waived; includes full vetting, microchip and microchip enrollment fee Good with other dogs: yes (He actually would do well in a home with one or two other dogs to watch and hopefully mirror other dogs that trust people.) Cats: yes Vetting: altered (spayed/neutered), UTD on shots, heartworm negative, fecal negative, on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped Health issues: none found Temperament:   scared, skittish, flight-risk if escapes handler… BUT with time and consistent handling/touching/petting, he can learn to trust his person or people;  new surroundings or people may always cause him to be anxious though. Energy level:  low Groom needs: low Biography:   We took in three Chihuahuas after the owner was in a terrible car accident.  The family reached out to a rescue-friend of ours and we agreed to take them in.  All three were very scared on intake… practically paralyzed with fear.   Of the three, Lutino was the first to come out of his shell and respond to us and Leonardo is coming around.  We currently have him posted as a foster-to-adopt but we may be taking him off of that because he is doing much better.  Spike, on the other hand, is still very scared, skittish and bitey when we try to get him.  Once we have him, he doesn’t try to bite.  We want to be fully transparent.  He will need someone that is experienced, patient, calm, consistent and a pack-leader type person.  He is NOT a dog that someone is going to come in and think they are going to turn him around overnight.  That won’t happen.  However, if the person is persistent in helping him turn around, we feel he will make progress.  We have been trying to work with Spike… corralling him… picking him up… petting him… rubbing his face and body to try to get him accustomed to touch and people.  We will require a very secure fenced yard.  If he has an opportunity to escape and he does escape…  capturing him will be a nightmare if he survives.  We just want him to have a chance.  Spike gets along with all the dogs and would do well in a home with other dogs because that is where he’s most comfortable.  He also does well in a kennel and will go in his kennel on his own in the evening when we leave for the day.  If you’d like to give Spike a chance, we welcome your application.   What we are looking for in an adopter: 1. Combination of pack leader/nurturing/patient/commitment-type person; someone that will continue to work on building his trust and be committed to enriching his future; 2. Absolutely no children at all; 3. Spouse or partner OK provided they are on board with the process and goal of making him a member of the family after the 30 day foster period; 4. Someone with the time and patience to work with him; 5. Other dogs OK but not a house full, as he needs to have one-on-one attention.   If during the 30 days you decide you are not the right home for Spike, you may bring him back… but you need to go into this with the mindset of giving him a permanent home.  Don’t think you are the dog whisperer and he’ll change overnight because that won’t happen.  This process could take months and he may always be skittish in certain settings.  You need to expect that.  You need to be willing to accept him as he is and work with and around his temperament to build his trust.   If during or at the end of the 30 days you decide you want to give him a permanent home, the adoption fee is waived and he will be yours.  We have had several foster-to-adopt success stories with dogs that have biting or behavioral issues.  We find that there are people out there who truly are up for the challenge.  Many of them have told us it was the best decision they’ve ever made.  Challenging dogs can bring about the biggest rewards you will ever know in your lifetime.  It just takes the right person. **IMPORTANT NOTES** *We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved. We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule. *All of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing. There is no exception to this rule! *HOUSETRAINING: We do NOT guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained. While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night. Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home. Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency. *We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome. Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate. *Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty. That’s our guarantee. Other notes: This pet is available for adoption through Ninna’s Road to Rescue, Benton, La. We are 501c3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to rescue small-breed dogs and a handful of cats and to re-home them into RESPONSIBLE and CARING forever homes. DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Time may be of the essence if you are looking to adopt a specific animal. We do not reserve animals, unless and until we have approved your application, provided the animal is still available at the time we receive your application. The first APPROVED application we receive will be considered. We are NOT a first come, first serve rescue!! We adopt our rescues out to the RIGHT home, not just A home. Only responsible pet owners need apply. Applying to adopt does NOT commit you to the adoption until you’ve met the pet (unless you already have and know you want to adopt the pet). CONTACT: Our adoptable pets are updated regularly, but if you want to check the availability of a pet... OR still have questions AFTER reading this profile, message us via our Facebook page. Please indicate the name when communicating with us. www.RoadtoRescueLA.org
