Worthy Dog Rescue

Worthy Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping dogs in distress, especially those living on chains, in pens, or in neglectful and abusive situations. Our mission is to provide a better life for these dogs, while working to address the root problems of animal overpopulation and improve animal welfare. We do this through community outreach and by supporting and educating dog owners in underserved communities, by sponsoring spay and neuter programs, and by rescuing and rehabilitating dogs in need.

Meet Mollie - ADOPTED!!

Meet Molly! This gorgeous Husky/Lab mix has lived most of her life chained or tethered outside, never knowing the comfort and security of home. Molly was known to animal advocates in the community who have taken her food to keep her healthy over the years, provided straw for warmth, and even built a doghouse for shelter when her family refused to bring her inside. Molly’s fortune recently changed when it was announced the trailer park where she lives was being demolished. Molly’s family had no plans to take her with them and surrendered her to rescue. Worthy Dog has helped rehome three other dogs from this same property, and we were so happy to see Molly gain her freedom. As expected with most outside dogs, Molly tested positive for heartworm but, luckily, appears to be at an early stage and does not exhibit any outward signs. She had no vet care over the years but has been fully vetted, spayed, and treated for heartworm, so she’s ready to start her new life. Molly has been in a foster home for the past seven weeks living with four other dogs (large and small) and two cats. Her foster family gradually introduced Molly to their pack as she was going through a significant life change and adjusting to life indoors as part of a family for the first time. Molly has done exceptionally well and is a very sweet, resilient girl. She was a natural with the cats and initially interested, but as soon as one of the kitties swatted her, she has left them alone ever since. She really enjoys the company of other dogs and is best paired with more laid-back dogs like herself. Molly and Shadow, the 5yo male Husky/GSD mix in her foster home, are absolute besties now and play constantly. Molly has also been great with the small dogs. She doesn’t seem to have any interest in chasing squirrels, so she would do great with small dogs and cats. We think Molly would be great as part of a calm pack but fine as an only dog too. She LOVES her humans and will follow you around the house. She is especially attached to her foster dad, who works from home. She gets a little anxious and whines when her foster parents leave her behind, but that is the extent of it. She’s a great co-worker and will chill out in the office while her foster parents work from home during the day. ***** We checked in with Molly’s foster mom, Tiffany, for a quick update: How is her energy level? Would you say she’s an active, moderate energy, or more mellow dog?  With her, I honestly think you get the best of both worlds - she loves to play and will walk and go anywhere with you, but is also perfectly happy to relax on the couch and watch a movie with you. She kind of takes on the energy of the house, so in the morning, she will play with Shadow and Evie for a few minutes and then when they lay down and we get ready for work, she lays down and relaxes. How are her leash-walking skills? She does ok on a leash, she pulls, but does great with a no-pull harness and listens pretty well to correction. She isn’t reactive to other dogs or people on a leash. I took her to a park and we passed by other dogs/ppl/children/bikes and she was just happy to be there! We met a couple kids while walking one day and she seemed cool as a cucumber. She was very comfortable around the kids and let them pet her with no issues whatsoever. How would you describe her personality - shy vs. confident? She can be a little shy at times with loud noises and such, but she’s mostly pretty confident, snuggly, and excited to just be a part of things. She LOVED the walks that I took her on before her heartworm treatment, so I think she would enjoy someone who is moderately active and who will actually take her out places. How are her house manners - crate trained/potty trained? She has done great with her housetraining and crate training. She was not happy about the crate at first, but now she will immediately go in her crate at mealtimes and/or will just go in there and relax during the day. Does she greet new people and visitors well? Yes! She will bark if someone is at the door, but she loves to meet new people and get lots of attention. ***** FOSTER UPDATE 5/12/23 - Molly came to N. VA in late April and is being fostered wtih another dog and 2 cats. Her local foster dad, Don, shared this update: Molly is doing really well. She has established a routine and settled into it. She has free roam of the house day and night but mostly stays wherever people are. At night, she has a dog bed in the master bedroom, as does Coco, and she goes to bed when we do. It took two weeks to be  relaxed enough to sleep soundly through the night. The other night she was “sleep barking” - apparently having a dream that required speaking . We have left her home alone for a couple of hours, even without Coco, and she is OK. She lay on the floor by the door and waits for you to come home.  She has started to “play” with toys. She really likes fluffy cloth toys - a duck, a fox, and a raccoon. She tears them to pieces and, thankfully, just leaves the pieces for us to clean up. She has taken antlers and Nylabones to her beds. She doesn’t seem to chew them - just keeps them in her bed … Molly loves people! She wants to meet everyone we see on walks and doesn’t understand why everyone doesn’t want to meet her and pet her! She isn’t particularly interested in other dogs, but, if one wants to meet her she is really good and greets them politely. She has met a couple of local dogs this week. Using a no-pull harness has made walking her much easier - and she loves to walk. I have been getting up at 6:00 AM and taking her for a 40-50 minute walk. Our pup, Coco, rarely wants to get up before 7:00AM, so we let her sleep while we walk.  As expected, after a couple of weeks she is feeling comfortable and confident, knows her way around the neighborhood, and has started to express preferences for where we should go on walks . ***** Molly loves her humans and is so grateful to know the love of family and security of home.
