Underdog Rescue MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control. While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Meet Dobby

Hi there! I'm Dobby, your future snuggle buddy! I'm a 1-year-old male Shar Pei weighing in at about 41 pounds (though I'm still working on gaining a few more). My foster parents say I’m the happiest boy around, and they’re not wrong—I love people and other dogs, and I’m always up for a cuddle or an adventure!  I have a couple of quirks you should know about. My skin and stomach are a little sensitive, so I’m on a special diet to keep me feeling my best. But don’t worry—it’s all manageable, and I’m thriving! I’m potty trained, and when you’re not home, I’ll be a perfect angel, free-roaming the house and keeping watch out the front window.  At home, I’m a professional snuggler. Whether we’re lounging on the couch or you’re tucked into bed, I want to be as close to you as possible. I’d love to share your bed, but I’m fine sleeping on my own bed on the floor too—as long as I’m in the same room as you. If you leave me alone in another room, I might bark at first, but I usually settle down after about 10 minutes.  I get along great with other dogs, though I’m still learning my manners with the bigger ones and can be a little too enthusiastic when meeting new friends on leash. I’m working on my leash training (a front-hook harness helps a lot!), but I do pull and need more practice. Speaking of training, I know “sit,” and I’m eager to learn more with your help!  I love chewing on hard bones and am just starting to enjoy softer toys. Treats are great too, but because of my sensitive tummy, I don’t get too many. I’m respectful with cats, and I’m fine as an only dog as long as I get lots of attention from my humans.  Oh, and about the yard—I don’t need a fence as long as you’re willing to take me on leash for potty breaks and exercise. I’m still learning not to try and sneak through the fence, so for now, I need to be on a leash outside.  All in all, I’m just a sweet, squishy-faced, fat-lipped lovebug who’s looking for a family to give me belly rubs, patience as I keep learning, and a whole lot of love. Could that be you? Let’s meet soon—I can’t wait! Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.    ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***

Adoption Process
Our process for adoption is: 1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application. 2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in. 3. The foster volunteer coordinates a “meet and greet” with you and any other members of your household. 4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
