This is a common disease in older small breed dogs. It is caused by thickening and degeneration of the mitral valve, causing it to become leaky, and allows backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium with every beat of the heart. This causes a heart murmur. At this point it is early and no medication is required. It can be progressive and medications may be required in the future.
