Friends of Macon County Missouri Animals

Our group started in 2019 because our founding member, Willadean Jackson, was upset when she saw the terrible living conditions at the Macon City Shelter (basically a dog pound). She reached out to others on Facebook and we created a non-profit to assist animals in Macon County Missouri (in the small town shelters and in the very rural areas). Since then, we have been helping animals in neighboring Shelby County as well because there's no humane society in our two counties. We are basically in "no man's land" when it comes to getting assistance for animals in need. Our goal at first was to build a shelter, but we could see that would cost more money than we fundraise. In the past 5 years we have grown greatly in numbers, numbers of members and animals saved. We, like most rescues, we are overwhelmed by the number of emails, messages, and calls we get from people needing our services. Now our main goal is to provide spay/neuter services for our community and try to slow down the pet population. We have been blessed to have several large donations to help provide free spay/neuter surgeries. We have also worked with the city of Macon to improve the conditions of the shelter. Now it's a much better place for a dog to find itself than it was years ago. It hasn't been easy getting to where we are now. We have had members come and go, but right now we have a great group of people that truly go out of their way to help the animals in our area.

Meet Buddy

Buddy is a very sweet, very happy 1-1/2 to 2 year old retriever lab mix who is currently in foster and surprising his foster mom with his trainability. He just wants to please and is a very smart boy.  Buddy was found as a stray and spent some time with a volunteer while attempts were made to locate owner. Sadly, no owner came forward and he was welcomed in to the Friends of Macon County Missouri Animals family officially. He has been with his foster for only a few days and his progress is remarkable.  Buddy is playful, gets along with other dogs and kids. He is friendly and has the energy one would expect from a young fella. Buddy does not exhibit any food aggression or resource guarding. He is housebroken, has mastered the doggie door, and respects the boundaries of other dogs.  He is bright, very trainable, and has already mastered "come" and "sit" in a few short days. He is eagerly working on other skills such as leash walking and walking. He likea car rides and loves to romp and play chase with his foster sister.  Buddy's perfect home would have a large fenced area with another energetic dog to play with and a young child or two to "grow up" with. He would be so loyal and the perfect lifetime companion or a young boy!!!!Buddy is fully vetted, neutered, up to date on all vaccines including bordatella (kennel cough), microchipped, heart worm negative and on monthly prevention, and on monthly prevention for fleas and ticks.  And his is ADORABLE!!!!
