Meet Niko! A charming two-and-a-half-year-old Australian Shepherd from San Diego, CA, whose heart is as big as his love for snacks. Wrapped in a stunning tricolor coat with mesmerizing icy blue eyes, Niko is a thoughtful, low-energy companion who thrives on routine, connection, and of course, delicious treats! This intelligent boy has completed both basic and intermediate training, mastering an impressive list of commands—including sit, stay, heel, and even recognizing specific toy names! He’s incredibly food-motivated, making training a joy (especially when carrots and celery are involved!). Niko is also crate-trained, house-mannered, and a perfect gentleman who patiently waits for permission before hopping on the furniture. He even respects your morning snooze and will quietly wait until you’re ready to start the day. At heart, Niko is a laid-back couch potato who simply enjoys being near his people. He doesn’t require high-energy activities but does enjoy a game of fetch, tug-of-war, or a (somewhat clumsy) attempt at catching a frisbee. He loves being included in daily life, whether that’s a stroll through an outdoor mall or relaxing at home. While he handles busy environments well, he has absolutely no fear of cars and needs a careful guardian to keep him safe during walks. He wears dog shoes for outdoor adventures and walks well on a harness, making him a stylish and well-behaved companion. Niko is a gentle soul who takes time to warm up to new people but is endlessly loyal once he does. He gets along well with cats and even enjoys playing with them, and while he can be a bit shy around other dogs, he remains friendly and respectful. His love language? Making his people happy (and getting rewarded with pets and treats in return). His most endearing quirks include politely "begging" by lying belly-up while you cook, trading his toys if he wants something, and bringing you his favorite toy if he senses you’re upset. And while he doesn’t give kisses, he’s been known to let out a perfectly timed burp in your direction—consider it his version of a love note! Niko has mild environmental allergies that require ongoing care, including weekly medicated baths and periodic Cytopoint injections. His new family should be mindful of his medication sensitivity due to his MDR1 gene variant. If you're looking for a devoted, well-mannered companion who will brighten your days with intelligence, affection, and the best side-eye in town, Niko is your guy!
