Burlington County Animal Alliance

Burlington County Animal Alliance is a private, independent, 501(3)(c) nonprofit animal advocacy group, that was founded in 1999 by Lorraine Schrieber and Barb Giano who have a love for animals. To date, we have around 60 members of BCAA. We focus primarily on rescue and adoption of shelter dogs and cats in high kill shelters and surrounding areas in New Jersey. Our main focus is to make the public aware of the numbers of homeless dogs and cats there are in shelters and to promote adoption of these animals. We advocate spaying and neutering of all companion animals to counteract the overpopulation of dogs and cats and to end the tragedy of euthanizing healthy, unwanted companion pets.

Meet Ivy

Meet Ivy! Ivy is a sweet and sensitive young dog who has made incredible progress in just two weeks with her foster. Weighing in at about 30 pounds, she’s the perfect medium-sized companion for someone looking for a loyal and trainable pup. Ivy is highly food motivated, which makes her a quick learner and eager to please—especially when treats are involved! She’s currently working on crate training and doing wonderfully. She sleeps through the night in her crate, stays calmly when left home alone, and is learning to enter her crate on cue with the “kennel” command. Her foster is also reinforcing calm behavior before releasing her from the crate, helping to build a sense of structure and trust.Potty training is going great, especially considering Ivy’s background. She’s never had an accident in her crate or pooped in the house. She prefers to have a companion go outside with her, as she’s still a bit nervous in the wind, but she does her business promptly once outdoors. Ivy is responsive to gentle verbal correction—she’s had a couple of peeing accidents on carpet when unsupervised, but she learned quickly and hasn’t repeated the behavior. Overall, she’s adapting to home life beautifully and shows great promise with continued consistency. When it comes to other dogs, Ivy is currently neutral. She peacefully coexists with her foster’s male and female dogs and has recently started to show interest in short play sessions, usually lasting about five minutes. She enjoys both chasing games and wrestling, but is just as content keeping to herself. Ivy is very people-focused and doesn’t seek out interaction with other dogs the way she does with her trusted human. Ivy bonds deeply with women and has become particularly attached to her female foster. She happily greets other women but prefers to stick close to the person she’s bonded with. Her biggest area of growth is learning to feel safe around men. While she was initially fearful, she’s made great strides with her male foster. He’s taken a calm and respectful approach, allowing Ivy to warm up on her own terms. She now sits by him, allows petting, and even chooses to sit next to him on the couch. Ivy did have one fearful response early on, but this has not repeated. The ideal home for Ivy would be one where a woman is her primary caregiver and willing to continue providing structure and gentle guidance. Any men in the home should be patient and let Ivy build trust at her own pace—she’s already proven she can and will do just that with time and care. Ivy is athletic, curious, and would likely thrive with someone interested in activities like agility, nose work, barn hunt, or hiking. She’d do well as an only dog or with one or two respectful canine companions. Her crate routine (for meals and sleeping) has helped her immensely, and her new family should be prepared to maintain it while she continues to adjust to life as a beloved pet.Ivy is a vibrant, soulful dog who’s still learning that she’s safe and loved. She’s already shown incredible resilience and growth. While she’ll need some patience and a transitional period, Ivy has all the makings of a deeply devoted companion. With the right home, she’ll blossom into the amazing dog she’s meant to be. Bcaaofnj.org to apply
