Chama Valley Humane Society

Founded in 1998, the Chama Valley Humane Society is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization supported entirely through fundraising, private donations, and grants. Our mission is to provide no-kill solutions to reduce the population of homeless cats and dogs by sponsoring a spay and neuter program for companion pets and feral cats, working with regional shelters and foster homes to rehabilitate and rehome animals, and educating those in the community we serve about responsible pet ownership. We serve a 600 square mile area of northern Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. We do not have a shelter, but we try to take in all animals we can from the Village of Chama holding facility as well as strays and unwanted animals throughout our region. All rescued animals are fostered locally until they can be adopted or transferred to no- or low-kill shelters or rescues. In addition to rescue and foster, we support the following programs:• A low-cost spay-neuter program for community pet owners• An Angel Fund to help pet owners pay for unexpected veterinarian bills through a no-interest revolving loan• WAG ‘n READ - A Reading Education and Assistance Dogs® program that works in our local schools to strengthen the animal-human bond while enhancing the reading experience for children

Meet Gus

Gus continues to grow and is turning into a lovely, playful boy. He knows sit and is good with a routine but still has a few trust issues. He loves to run and play with his foster siblings. We love him, but already have a houseful! He will probably do best in a home with at least one other friendly dog. Oh my, the progress Gus has made this past week! He is now going out on his own, mostly following our other dogs, and playing and doing his business. He still does well in his X-pen but is now mingling with the other dogs in the living area and even mingling more with the people! He does get carsick, but that is not unusual in young dogs. He LOVES to play with toys and other dogs and is not afraid of cold--has a nice thick coat. We love this boy, but want him to find his own home before he gets too settled as we are too old to take in another pup! Baby Gus showed up at a home in northern New Mexico with some old bite wounds and a puncture wound on his abdomen. We took him in and got him to vet on same day. He had surgery to repair the puncture and was neutered at the same time. Doing well physically but we are working to help him overcome fearfulness.  Sweet boy who will do well with gentle people and animals but may need some adjustment at first.
