Cookie is a beautiful 7-year-old mixed-breed gal who currently weighs about 10 pounds. She came to SFAS when her guardian could no longer care for her and she is now ready for a new family. Cookie came to SFAS when his guardian could no longer care for her and she is now ready for a new family. Here at the shelter, Cookie has been a great dog who loves to hang out with her best friends. Cookie, and Brownie came to SFAS together. These two are bonded, meaning that they are too attached to one another to be separated, and must be adopted to a new home together. If you have other dogs at home, we encourage you to bring them along for a Meet n' Greet with this terrific trio. Cookie and Brownie adoption fee all together is $25. They are neutered/spayed and microchipped and have age-appropriate vaccinations. A licensing/microchip fee may apply. SFAS offers a variety of excellent training classes, community connection events, and workshops led by animal behavior professionals. In-person classes have resumed with COVID-safe practices in place; we will also continue to offer basic classes via Zoom. If you adopted your animal from a shelter or rescue group, you receive a $50 discount on every class. For class descriptions, schedules, and registration visit https://sfhumanesociety.org/training
Adoption Process
If you have made the careful decision to bring a companion animal into your life, chances are that the Santa Fe Animal Shelter has a dog, cat, kitten, puppy, ferret, rabbit, guinea pig, or other fuzzy critter that will match your home and lifestyle.
Matchmaking is an important part of our adoption process, and we pride ourselves on helping hopeful animal lovers find a companion that will fit their lifestyle. Before choosing your new companion, think about how much time you have to spend with him. Consider the time involved: a healthy puppy can live for 15 to 20 years! Remember that settling in a new four-legged family member can take some time and adjustment. Bear in mind that just like us, your companion animal will need food and supplies and have to visit a doctor from time to time.
We invite you to visit our animals in the Shelter, at our satellite adoption facility inside PetSmart (3561 Zafarano Drive) or online. Once you have an idea what you’re looking for, one of our adoption counselors will visit with you and share some ideas about which of our residents would be best suited to you.
All animals are spayed or neutered and microchipped before leaving and receive the required age-appropriate vaccines. For your convenience, the required licenses for City and County residents are available at the Shelter as you adopt!
Adoption is a partnership between the adopter, the Shelter and the animal. We are committed to making that partnership work for everyone.
Dog/Cat Adoption Fees
Dog/Cat adoption fees range from fee-waived (thanks to our generous contributors) to $400. Our adoption fees help to offset the cost of evaluation, housing, feeding and medical care for the thousands of animals who come through our doors. We try to keep our adoption prices reasonable while generating income to care for all animals in our care until we can place them in a loving home.
The adoption fee for each animal varies and is dependent on many factors including: age, size, behavior, medical condition and public demand.
All animals are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Holds are available when the animal is ready for adoption. Please read How to Place an Animal on Hold.
Shelter Heroes
Some of the animals in our adoption center are Shelter Heroes. These dogs/cats are those who are in high demand and quickly find a loving home. You will notice that our Shelter Hero animals have a higher adoption price – this is because they leave a financial legacy for the other animals in our care who may need extensive medical care or more time to find a loving home.
Shelter Heroes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Paid holds are available when the dog/cat is ready for adoption.
