Safe At Last Animal Rescue

Safe At Last Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer not-for-profit group dedicated to saving the lives of shelter animals. Every day, staggering numbers of wonderful animals are discarded in shelters across the country. Irresponsible pet ownership -- be it, the failure to spay/neuter or follow through on one's commitment -- results in a tragic loss of life. We, at Safe At Last, feel these animals need a voice. It is Safe At Last's mission to help ease the suffering, as well as stop it at its source. We do this by taking animals into our organization from shelters across the country, fostering them in our homes, providing them proper veterinary care, and then matching them with wonderful forever homes. Further, to help assist with the financial plight in many of the shelters, we send the bulk of our adoptions fees back to the shelters. We also do fundraisers to raise much needed monies for the shelters, many of which are barely able to keep their doors open. These funds assist the shelters in buying the basics (food & medicines) for the continuing influx of animals. These monies also allow the shelters to provide more advanced medical care (e.g., heartworm treatment, special surgeries), thus increasing the likelihood that these animals will be able to get to rescue. Safe At Last is also working directly with shelters to assist in facilitating adoptions directly from those facilities. This not only gets more animals out of the shelters and into forever homes, but also provides much-needed financial support. Finally, Safe At Last is dedicated to education (both online and event-related). Educational efforts are multi-dimensional. We educate relative to stopping the overpopulation problem at its source, by emphasizing the need to spay and neuter. We also educate to increase awareness regarding animals already in need, stressing adoption via rescue rather than pet shops or breeders. Finally, we educate regarding responsible pet ownership and general "pet-related" matters. At Safe at Last, we remain committed to saving shelter pets, one life at a time.

Meet Kelso

Meet Kelso, Red, Hyde and Fez.  Currently (2/23/23), these boys are about 10 weeks old and weigh in between 8 and 14 lbs (with Red being the smallest at 8 lbs, Kelso at 12 lbs, and the other two boys being between 12 and 14 lbs.  Our best assessment (NO GUARANTEE) is that these babies are lab/aussie mixes.  We anticipate (THOUGH CANNOT GUARANTEE) that they will be medium to the lower end of large in size in size when full grown. These boys had a rough start to life, being outside all the time - as part of two litters of 11 puppies from two teenage momma dogs.  These babies (and the others in the litters who also are now safe in rescue) had to fight for everything.  Those days, however, are behind them.  Life is now looking good – with ample food, soothing baths, medical care, good food, and lots of love and attention.  These pups are taking advantage of every moment of their wonderful new start to life.  They are soaking up the loving and playing happily as puppies should.  We have promised them that this is only the beginning and that life will get even better when they find wonderful forever families of their own.  As for individual personalities, we are still watching them develop; but we are pretty sure that their individual ways will match their adorable little faces.  We can keep you posted with updates on that.  In terms of status, right now, the pups are in foster care with our amazing rescue partners in North Carolina and are getting basic vetting, as well as socialization with other animals/people in their foster homes.  We anticipate that these babies will be making their way north in about two weeks, after they have had a chance to unwind, enjoy and complete some basic meds (deworming, etc.)  We will keep prospective adopters updated on timing regarding their journey north to New York. We welcome your interest in these sweet boys.  Please be mindful, however, that adopting a puppy is more than falling in love with a picture.  It’s a 10 to 15 year commitment that involves a lot of time/care, responsible parenting/training, love/patience, and a financial commitment as well.  If you have the time, willingness and ability to make that commitment to one of these precious pups for his whole life – no matter what may lie ahead in yours – we’d love to see your application. _______________________________________________________________________ **If you are seriously interested, YOU NEED TO APPLY (AS DESCRIBED BELOW). Also, a follow-up email to [email protected] is strongly recommended. ______________________________________________________________________ To pursue adoption, please register on www.safeatlast.net.  (Click Register on the left-hand side of our homepage.)  When you receive your password on your email account, please log back on to our website to complete the SAFE AT LAST on-line adoption application.  (Click Forms/Application on the left-hand side of our homepage and select the Adoption Application.) Once we have your completed application, if we feel you are a good match, we will contact you by email. (So, please check your SPAM.)  Our process is straightforward but involves a phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment.  An adoption fee of $450, and a refundable $35 spay/neuter deposit (required by NYS law), apply. YOU CANNOT MEET THE PUPS UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO ADOPT.  WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOU UNTIL YOU HAVE SUBMITTED THE FULLY FILLED OUT SAFE AT LAST ON-LINE ADOPTION APPLICATION.  Delay in submitting your application will put you behind other potentially suitable applicants.  Ultimately, approved adopters will be required to go to the foster home to complete the adoption (in the Schoharie/Albany County area). (Also, we will not respond to generic "check the box" petfinder inquiries.)   NYS Rescue Registry No. RR 087

Adoption Process
The adoption process will begin with an extensive adoption application, accessible on our website. In addition to a series of questions (e.g., to ascertain the adopter's likes/dislikes, lifestyle, and general suitability), the application will require, among other things, a veterinary reference and two personal (non-family member) references. In lieu of a veterinary references, we will require 3 personal references. We will also require submission of digital photos of home and yard, as well as a home visit. Approved adopters will be required to take their pup or dog to the vet within 7 days of adoption. Each animal adopted from Safe At Last will go home with a medical booklet, complete with all details of vetting done prior to adoption, with explicit instructions as to the follow up required. All animals will be UTD with all age appropriate shots prior to adoption, and barring any health reasons that would preclude it, they will be placed on topical protection for fleas/ticks, and based on age, also started on heartworm preventative (or provided with the first dose). Any animals older than 4 months will be spayed/neutered before adoptions. For animals under 4 months old, the adoption contract will require spay/neuter by the time the animal is 6 months of age. We will require proof of same and will assign one of our members to have the task of following up on proof of spay and neuter. Under the contract, the adoptive family will not "own" the animal until we have received proof of spay and neuter. Failure to have the surgery performed will allow us, under the contract, to reclaim the pet.
