Meet Chocolate (male) & Candy (female-ADOPTED)!They are 10 weeks old (born ~1/16/25), best guess, no guarantee is that they are Pit Bull/Lab mixes. They will likely be ~50-60lb adults - again no guarantees.Currently (3/29), Chocolate weighs 15 pounds, with slightly shorter legs; and Candy also weights 15 pounds and just a hair taller. They are typical puppies, although they trend on the more active side, so potentially adopters should consider this. Candy is generally more confident, brave and ready for adventure. Chocolate, who we heard was the smallest of the litter, just trends to be a bit more unsure of new experiences, but he is watching the big dogs and learning how to approach new situations. As with any puppy, they will need families committed to begin and continue training in their new adoptive homes. And, as with all of our puppies, we recommend taking a basic group training class for exposure, a bonding experience with their new families, and of course continuing paths to becoming lovely, trained, well-behaved & well-adjusted adult canine citizens. They have been dewormed and are up-to-date on age appropriate vaccines (parvo/distemper), flea/tick preventative (if needed), & microchipped!____________________________________________________________________ **If you are interested, YOU NEED TO APPLY. Also, a follow-up email to their foster mom at [email protected] is strongly recommended. To pursue adoption, please register on www.safeatlast.net. (Click Register on the left-hand side of our homepage.) When you receive your password on your email account, please log back on to our website to complete the SAFE AT LAST on-line adoption application. (Click Forms/Application on the left-hand side of our homepage and select the Adoption Application.) Once we have your completed application, if we feel you are a good match, we will contact you by email. (So, please check your SPAM.) Our process is straightforward but involves a phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment. An adoption fee of $450, and a refundable $35 spay/neuter deposit (required by NYS law), apply. YOU CANNOT MEET OUR RESCUE ANIMALS UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO ADOPT. WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOU UNTIL YOU HAVE SUBMITTED THE FULLY FILLED OUT SAFE AT LAST ON-LINE ADOPTION APPLICATION. Delay in submitting your application will put you behind other potentially suitable applicants. Ultimately, approved adopters will be required to complete an adoption in Schoharie County. Thank you for your interest.(Sorry, we will not respond to generic "check the box," "Is s/he available," "Can you give me more information" inquiries.) NYS Rescue Registry No. RR 087
Adoption Process
The adoption process will begin with an extensive adoption application, accessible on our website. In addition to a series of questions (e.g., to ascertain the adopter's likes/dislikes, lifestyle, and general suitability), the application will require, among other things, a veterinary reference and two personal (non-family member) references. In lieu of a veterinary references, we will require 3 personal references. We will also require submission of digital photos of home and yard, as well as a home visit. Approved adopters will be required to take their pup or dog to the vet within 7 days of adoption. Each animal adopted from Safe At Last will go home with a medical booklet, complete with all details of vetting done prior to adoption, with explicit instructions as to the follow up required. All animals will be UTD with all age appropriate shots prior to adoption, and barring any health reasons that would preclude it, they will be placed on topical protection for fleas/ticks, and based on age, also started on heartworm preventative (or provided with the first dose). Any animals older than 4 months will be spayed/neutered before adoptions. For animals under 4 months old, the adoption contract will require spay/neuter by the time the animal is 6 months of age. We will require proof of same and will assign one of our members to have the task of following up on proof of spay and neuter. Under the contract, the adoptive family will not "own" the animal until we have received proof of spay and neuter. Failure to have the surgery performed will allow us, under the contract, to reclaim the pet.
