Meet Koko
Meet little Koko!Best guess, NO GUARANTEE, is that Koko is a Chihuahua mix, with what we're not sure, Dachshund? Shih Tzu? Spaniel? She is about 10lbs, and our best assessment (NO GUARANTEE) is that she is 2-3 years old.Is Koko sweet as chocolate? Well, yes. Is Koko beautiful? Well, yes. Is Koko still a little unsure of what a loving home and her own humans are? Well, yes. Is Koko worth the patience love and celebrating every little milestone? Her foster mom says absolutely!! Koko is the tiniest of our rescues from a backyard breeder/hoarder situation. She had always shared a small muddy kennel with larger dogs and had very little human contact/touch. So, yes, she is unsure but wants so desperately to be like her foster fur siblings. She wiggles and smiles and comes close, and when she finally does experience some love, she leans in. She just needs time, love, patience and reassurance. The one thing she is completely comfortable with is being her canine foster sister's bestie. She adores having someone to play and nap with, and they are the cutest little lady pals - we think Koko will do best in a home with another adjusted canine companion as she does lean in to more human time when she sees the others enjoying their belly rubs. She crates when asked, including for her breakfast and dinner. She has the cutest little bow beg she does for her treats when she is a good girl. And foster mime says she is a good girl a lot. Potty training is almost perfect as long as you watch her signals, and she keeps her crate clean. She truly is going to be the cutest little love bug when she settles in. Please fill out our online adoption application if you are interested in her. Koko is spayed, up-to-date on core vaccines, dewormed, current on flea preventative, and can be microchipped! ____________________________________________________________________**If you are interested, YOU NEED TO APPLY. Also, a follow-up email to [email protected] is strongly recommended. To pursue adoption, please register on www.safeatlast.net. (Click Register on the left-hand side of our homepage.) When you receive your password on your email account, please log back on to our website to complete the SAFE AT LAST on-line adoption application. (Click Forms/Application on the left-hand side of our homepage and select the Adoption Application.) Once we have your completed application, if we feel you are a good match, we will contact you by email. (So, please check your SPAM.) Our process is straightforward but involves a phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment. An adoption fee of $450 applies. YOU CANNOT MEET OUR RESCUE ANIMALS UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO ADOPT. WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOU UNTIL YOU HAVE SUBMITTED THE FULLY FILLED OUT SAFE AT LAST ON-LINE ADOPTION APPLICATION. Delay in submitting your application will put you behind other potentially suitable applicants. Ultimately, approved adopters will be required to complete an adoption in Schoharie/Albany County. Thank you for your interest.(Sorry, we will not respond to generic "check the box," "Is s/he available," "Can you give me more information" inquiries.) NYS Rescue Registry No. RR 087
Adoption Process
The adoption process will begin with an extensive adoption application, accessible on our website. In addition to a series of questions (e.g., to ascertain the adopter's likes/dislikes, lifestyle, and general suitability), the application will require, among other things, a veterinary reference and two personal (non-family member) references. In lieu of a veterinary references, we will require 3 personal references. We will also require submission of digital photos of home and yard, as well as a home visit. Approved adopters will be required to take their pup or dog to the vet within 7 days of adoption. Each animal adopted from Safe At Last will go home with a medical booklet, complete with all details of vetting done prior to adoption, with explicit instructions as to the follow up required. All animals will be UTD with all age appropriate shots prior to adoption, and barring any health reasons that would preclude it, they will be placed on topical protection for fleas/ticks, and based on age, also started on heartworm preventative (or provided with the first dose). Any animals older than 4 months will be spayed/neutered before adoptions. For animals under 4 months old, the adoption contract will require spay/neuter by the time the animal is 6 months of age. We will require proof of same and will assign one of our members to have the task of following up on proof of spay and neuter. Under the contract, the adoptive family will not "own" the animal until we have received proof of spay and neuter. Failure to have the surgery performed will allow us, under the contract, to reclaim the pet.
