CrisisDogsNC

CrisisDogsNC is a foster-based, 501 (c) (3) non-profit founded in 2017 by journalist and author Judith Reitman Texier whose investigative articles garnered international awards and prompted changes in animal welfare laws. She created the Organization in response to North Carolina’s euthanasia rate which is among the highest in the country and to many of its shelters’ methods of euthanasia that are so inhumane they are outlawed in most other states. We rescue dogs from kill shelters, substandard backyard breeders, hoarders, and from chains. We provide full medical care, foster homes, and transport by land and air through our partnership with PilotsNPaws to fully screened and qualified adopters all along the East Coast. What distinguishes us from other rescues is our focus on the relationship between the rescued dog and the new family. By understanding your lifestyle and expectations, as well as the personalities of our rescue dogs, we can make a compatible match for a lifelong bond. We are in it for the life of the dog. At any point after adoption, if the adopter's situation changes for whatever reason, we will always accept the dog back into the rescue.

Meet Mattie

Mattie is a 6-year-old, 13 lb Wheaten Terrier Mix. After coming to the rescue in rough shape while living on the streets, Mattie has made huge strides in his foster home and is ready for the cushy, good life! He would love to find a family or single-person home where he can relax and lounge and be loved on all day. He came to the rescue with a serious, non-surgically repairable hip issue and very skinny. Despite his handicap, he is doing remarkably well on low-cost pain medication. He has already learned how to navigate the stairs in his foster home, runs and plays with his foster siblings, and loves chasing balls! He is fully-house trained and crate-trained and can be left at home in his crate when his foster family is out. He really prefers being near his people and would be best suited for a retired or work-from-home owner. He has done well with the older/considerate foster kids in his home too. He gets along well with dogs his size and cats, but has yet to interact with larger dogs/animals. Mattie loves cheese and treats and if he is being a little stubborn, he can easily be coaxed with yummy goodies! Due to his past trauma and hip pain, he is a little hesitant about being picked up, but he has started jumping into his foster's arms. A fenced yard is recommended, and while he shouldn't go on long walks, he does enjoy playing and running freely in the yard! Mattie is VERY affectionate and loves to snuggle near his person, but due to his trauma this has to be on his terms. His greatest goal in life is to be a lounging lap dog who will have someone spend time doting on him. Mattie can't wait to find his person/people and show them that despite all he has been through, he has so much love still to give! He will need someone patient who can give him the time he needs to build trust, so someone who is familiar with dogs who have experienced trauma would be necessary for this boy to thrive. Comprehensive details are provided in the dog's description. To ensure a smooth process, please submit a completed application through our website at: http://crisisdogsnc.org/dog-adoption/. Please note that questions via email or social media channels may not receive a response without a completed application. As part of our commitment to responsible adoption practices, we require excellent veterinarian references and conduct virtual home visits. Additionally, your prior or current dog must be on year-round heartworm prevention. We provide transportation by both land and air whenever feasible. All assessments regarding breed and age are conducted by licensed veterinarians. We look forward to assisting you in finding your perfect canine companion!
