The Appalachian Highlands Humane Society promotes Spay/Neuter. We pull animals from our local animal shelter and place them in foster care, give them any medical attention they need, spay/neuter prior to adoptions. We also, review craigslist on a daily basis and contact individuals listing "free" puppies, dogs, cats and kittens in an effort to get them to surrender to us and attempt to educate these individuals about spay/neuter and the danger of listing free animals. Along with our foster animals, we take animals currently residing in our local shelter to adoption events.

Meet Bruce

Meet Bruce! Bruce is a one-year-old Great Dane. As one would imagine, this is a big dog. He weighs in at nearly 110 pounds but will likely grow as he was severely malnourished when he first joined our program. Bruce is really just a giant puppy that needs to be taught how to be a dog. We had to start from the very bottom with him and work slowly to where he is now. When he came to us, he did not know how to interact with other dogs, play with toys, or eat from a bowl. This was all foreign territory. He's come a long way, but we don't wish to sugarcoat things as we fear this may prevent him from finding the right home. The person(s) adopting Bruce has their work cut out for them with training, but this is a dog with such GREAT potential. He would thrive in a home environment. Bruce is dog friendly with a proper introduction. As far as kids go, we would feel best with him going to a home with mature children or teenagers. While breed experience isn't required, it is preferred, and we will require thorough research of the breed at a minimum. We've done everything in our power to ensure Bruce is set up for success. He's been neutered, fully vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed, and microchipped. We are working with him daily and he continues to improve! We've set the foundation, now it's time for an adopter to take over and "build the house" of success for Bruce. If interested, please email [email protected] with questions and complete an adoption application at ahhumanesociety.org/dog-adoption-application/ or email [email protected] with any questions!

Adoption Process
$50.00 for cats and kittens, dogs range from $150.00 to $275.00. We have adoption applications and contracts for potential adopters to complete. Vet references are checked and home visits on some animals are required.
