Adopt A Pit Rescue Inc

Adopt a Pit Rescue, Inc. is the largest Pit Bull rescue in the Miami Valley. We save, rehabilitate, & rehome dogs from local kill shelters. When we have space, we take in owner surrenders or lost dogs rescued by community members. Founded in 2013 to rescue and rehabilitate Pit Bulls & other "bully breeds", we have since adopted out over 1600 dogs, and currently have around 115 adoptable dogs in over 60 foster homes. The majority of our dogs come from high kill shelters, where they are quite literally on death row. We focus on dogs who are deemed "unadoptable" at the shelters due to injuries, illness, because they are scared, or simply because of their breed. We try to focus on our local animal shelter, but will transport dogs from other counties when we have available fosters. We are currently the only rescue pulling pit bulls from our local shelter. Our Board of Directors is 2 very dedicated women who do not receive any payment for what they do. They each have a house full of difficult dogs that they take because no one else will. They work tirelessly to correct behavior to get them ready for their forever homes. We have a network of fantastic volunteers who foster, transport, perform adoptions, help with our rescue sites, and do all the other necessary things to keep the rescue running. We rely on donations and adoption fees to pay for everything our dogs need.

Meet Banksy

Meet Banksy! This big sweetheart is so sweet and charming. He’s a very handsome boy and gets compliments whenever he meets someone new. He’s approximately 4-5 months old and weighs about 35 lbs.   Besides his good looks and sweet demeanor, let’s talk about his other positive qualities! He’s very good on a leash, currently mastering walking on the right side (his foster mom’s preference), and coming to the command “To Me”. He also sits politely for putting on and taking off the collar/leash. In fact, his foster mom confidently says he’s mastered the “Sit” command in every environment so far.   When you’re giving him pets, especially massages, he simply melts right into the floor, no jumping or play bites. He is non-reactive to the vacuum and other loud noises inside the house. Speaking of loud noises, Banksy lives with 4 young kids, ages 7-9, and he watches with calm amusement as they stomp around the living room doing Irish Dance, which goes on ALL THE TIME at his foster home. The kids are in charge of his food and water, and he doesn’t show even a hint of resource guarding. Same with his toys, which he happily brings to you when he wants to play fetch or tug of war.   What else? He’s a great companion for running errands in the car - no car sickness. He just happily snuggles down on the rug his foster mom placed on the floor for him.    He seems to love warm baths and his short Pittie fur air dries in no time. He has no problem letting people handle his legs and paws and, while his foster mom hasn’t yet needed to trim his nails, she makes sure to touch and massage his paws throughout the day, every day, to make sure he stays used to the sensation.   Banksy is fantastic with going in his kennel, both for intermittent rest periods throughout the day and overnight. He lays down right away and doesn’t make a peep until he’s let out. His foster mom recommends keeping him kennel trained overnight and when stays home alone for any length of time, only because he’s still a puppy and likes to grab a random shoe, sock, or kid toy if it’s lying around. He hasn’t chewed up anything yet but, being a puppy, he would obliviously and joyfully chew something like that if he was given the opportunity.    Banksy’s house has a strict “no dogs on the couch or bed” rule so, after trying twice during his first day home, he’s never thought about it since. There is a cat in the home that IS allowed on the couch. Banksy is curious about the cat and does play bows and pounces to try to engage the cat to play. But, since the cat has no desire to join in, he loses interest eventually.    The only current skill that he’s still working on is house/potty training. He’s doing so well but, since he’s still young and fairly new to spending his entire day inside, he needs regular potty walks outside, and will most likely have an overnight accident, until his little bladder is bigger and strong enough to hold it for a long period of time. Given how quickly he’s learning all his other skills, his foster mom is confident that he’ll have it mastered within a few short weeks.    Adopting Banksy into your family will seriously be like winning the family dog lottery! He is an absolute sweetheart, so smart and loving, eager to play and learn new skills, people loving and quick to melt right into your body and heart.

Adoption Process
Applicants must fill out an application at www.adoptapitrescue.org/apply. We screen all applications, with approved applicants passing a vet and landlord check. All pets in the home must be spayed/neutered and up to date on all vaccinations and on year-round heartworm preventative. Non-homeowners must have permission from their landlord to have a dog. Once approved, we schedule a home visit, where an adoption representative takes the dog to the adopter's home to see if the dog is a good fit for the family and other pets, as well as verify the home is a safe environment for the dog. If everyone feels the dog is a good fit, a contract is signed, adoption fee is paid, and the family takes possession of the dog, unless other arrangements are made. Typical adoption fees are $175 for adult dogs and $200 for puppies. We reserve the right to charge different fees for "designer" breeds. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm tested, and on heartworm preventative at the time of adoption. All dogs have been examined by our veterinarian and given a clean bill of health at the time of adoption.
