They call me Hannah now. I like the way it sounds, soft and kind, like the hands that scratch behind my ears. I didn’t always have a name. I used to just wander, looking for a place to rest, a safe spot where my belly didn’t growl so much. I don’t remember how long I was out there, just that one day, someone scooped me up and waited for someone to come looking for me. Nobody did. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think. People had never been cruel to me, but they hadn’t always been gentle either. I kept my distance, watching with quiet eyes. But then I started to see—the kindness, the patience. I started to feel—warmth, full meals, soft beds. And little by little, I let myself get closer. Now, I still get shy sometimes. New places, loud noises, sudden movements—they make me pause. But if you sit with me, if you let me come to you, I will. And once I do? Oh, I’ll be in your lap before you know it, curling up like I’ve belonged there all along. They say I’m a “Georgia Brown Dog.” I don’t know what that means, but I do know I love other dogs, that I watch them to see what’s okay and what’s not. They help me be brave. I think I’d like to have a friend, someone to play with, to run with, to show me the ropes. I may not have had a home before, but I think I’m ready for one now. A quiet place with love, patience, and maybe a soft couch where I can curl up close. I’ve spent a long time waiting—maybe I’ve been waiting for you.
