Sophia

Dakota Dachshund Rescue

Diane started doing fostering at the Sioux Falls Humane Society and then Pet Pals for Life. She had a passion for dachshunds. We noticed that the Sioux Falls area had a need for a dachshund rescue so her and I (Doug) started DDR. The response and need was much greater than we anticipated.

Meet Sophia

Sophia update 1/26/2025 At first glance, Sophie is super easy. She is usually pretty chill in a kennel, sweet, adorable, and quiet. If you leave her kennel door open she will often go back in it after hanging out in the house a bit. She loves sitting next to you in a recliner. She has been pretty timid and shy but is starting to let her sweet silly side show. Once you get to know her you can see she will need time, work, love to be more trusting and to be her best self and patience with potty training although she’s doing pretty well! The other day I was gone more than I normally am and my husband went to pick her up out of her kennel and she got so nervous she instantly peed all over and pooped. When he went to get her from outside she pooped again. This was really surprising because they have been around eachother. She can turn a little crazy wiggly when she gets scared and can run herself into her kennel doors trying to get in if it’s closed or wiggly out of hands. This is also a little random as she has gone to Remedy Brewing for the Tuesday evenings Find the Queen of Hearts progressive raffle fundraiser and has done amazing. She loves hanging out on our porch. I would leave her leash on the first few days in a yard as the first day we had a hard time catching her until she realized she just likes the porch anyway. She is picky about food and likes to dig it out so it was hard to tell that she really wasn’t eating well! Now we do twice a day 1/3 cup kibbles topped with canned food gravy (a scoop of canned food watered down) or some plain cooked meat mixed in and she has been eating well. Her coat should get glamorous poofy again someday! Part of the initial change and not eating and being a little scared she dropped a ton of her coat :( Wishing all the best to her!  We are an all-volunteer/foster home-based rescue. Very shy and timid as she has only lived in a breeding facility prior coming to Dakota Dachshund Rescue. She is just starting her journey to become a house pet and a member of a family. She is not housetrained, she is just starting to learn these things. She does not walk on a harness and leash so she does need a securely fenced yard to keep her safe. Sophia is 4 yrs 10 months old.Her adoption fee is $350 plus sales tax 15.75=$365.75   My adoption fee helps cover all of my vetting needs such as HW test, rabies, DHPPL, Bordetella, spay, dental and microchipping.

Adoption Process
Usually we are contacted by a SD shelter about a dachshund that is not doing well (nipping etc.) and that they are going to be put down. We take them in get them vetted and then place them up for adoption after they have been evaluated. We also take calls from folks who have called their local shelter about there dachshund that may have started nipping at small children etc and are told the dog would be put down. We also take calls from other rescues about breeder dogs.
