Cumberland County Animal Shelter

Cumberland County Animal Shelter houses approximately 2000 animals every year. They have a small staff of a shelter Director and two full-time employees with the rest of the staff made up of part-timers who come and go. As a private, retired citizen, The shelter director has authorized me to go into the shelter five days a week to photograph animals to post at online adoption sites. I add, edit and then delete animals when they have been adopted or are no longer available. Because they do not have a large enough staff to handle this type of work, I am able to do it for the shelter, mostly from my home, as a free service.

Meet ESMERELDA (Spayed!)

This beautiful dog has been at the shelter since July 2023. ESMERELDA is a friendly, gentle and happy 70 pound dog! In fact, she was adorably sweet during her check in process. She is listed as a Bulldog with brindle and white markings. An estimated age is not yet listed on her cage card. Actually, she would not stand still when she was weighed on the scale so how do that 70 pounds is a close estimate. Some girls just are not going to tell you their true weight, no matter what! Thanks to a partnership in between the University of Tennessee and Cumberland County Animal Shelter, ESMERELDA, was spayed and received a rabies vaccine on Monday, February 12, 2024. As a result, she can go home the same day that she is adopted. Serious adopters are encouraged to CALL the shelter to schedule an adoption appointment. Staff can explain the adoption procedures and fees when you arrive. The shelter does require EXACT change in the form of cash or a check. The shelter is UNABLE to accept credit or debit. So, please go prepared! That includes taking your own dog collar and leash with you to the adoption appointment in case you do decide to adopt ESMERELDA. Even better, consider taking a dog crate with you to that adoption appointment. No animal should be allowed to run freely in any vehicle. Especially an animal that you have just adopted! Safety first!

Adoption Process
Adoption contract, Adoption fee of $50 per cat and $80 per dog set by county commission and subject to change, drivers license and cash or check only. The adoption fees currently cover most, but not all, of the spay/neuter cost incurred by the county.
