For over a year, CMP wandered and lingered around a construction site at Haughton High School. No one knew where he came from… he just appeared one day. Construction workers would give him a little of their lunch and one of the superintendents started leaving him breakfast, which CMP (from a distance) waited for every morning. Over time, he got to where he’d lie in the grass or near the pipes and bricks and just watch the crews as they worked. At night, he’d go into the building being constructed because it was warm. Teachers, students, staff, bus drivers, cars passing by, neighbors, etc., knew about him and were growing increasingly concerned because everyone knows that it’s usually just a matter of time before something is going to happen to a small dog if they are left to their own devices… whether it’s being clipped by a car or nabbed by a coyote or some other wild animal. Animal control was called and they tried to capture him but he wasn’t having it. We were contacted by one of the teachers and we attempted to trap him; setting three traps and going out every day for about two weeks baiting the trap. The only thing we caught was a big fat possum chowing down on the delicious chicken strips. Eventually we had to give up our efforts but we did offer a reward to the constructions workers and started spreading the word about the reward in hopes that someone that was regularly out there could work on gaining his trust. It took a teacher to do just that! Jessica Kratzer had been working slowly to gain his trust and one day, she sat down on a stoop by the construction site and CMP just walked right up to her! He made his way to us and after a couple of days of decompressing, we sent him to our groomer and then to our vet and look at him now!! If you watch his videos (and if you knew him while he was at the school) you wouldn’t recognize him as the same dog. The only reason we KNOW we have the right dog is the tooth that sticks out from his bottom jaw. Here is a link to his original story: https://www.facebook.com/NinnasRoadToRescue/posts/pfbid02oihs8rvuDjRTwEcBJG7YiFq7jCFM5kxayFhQTptSnncrPoLSspBwtndsKxJz8Sp3l A few things we’ve learned about CMP since he’s been with us: The groomer said he did great up until it was time for the dryer. She said he sort of freaked out but calmed down after some time. He does great in a kennel. Initially, he would chew through leashes (yes, we lost a couple)… so, we worked on leash-training him in the fenced back yard of the rescue before we took him to the street to walk. Now, he walks fine on a leash although he does get a little spooked by loud noises and cars. He’ll need a little more work on that. Basically what we’ve been doing is just stopping on the road when a car approaches. We ONLY use locking slip leads with him. We wouldn’t want him spooking and slipping out of a collar or harness. He is curious of other dogs and playful. If a dog acts scared or tries to run from him, he will give chase and due to him being bigger than the dogs at our rescue, it does scare them even more. He would do best in a home with a playful dog who is not timid or fearful. He does jump up on people and could use some training in that regard. We’d love an experienced home for him that is willing to work with him, take him on walks, continue to socialize him with others and other dogs. Keep in mind, he’s been on his own for over a year. He came so far in such a short time and he’s SO EAGER to please and learn! Such a treasure he will be for some lucky family. **IMPORTANT NOTES** *We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved. We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule. *Most of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing. There is no exception to this rule! *PREDATORS: IF THIS DOG IS UNDER 10 POUNDS, the dog is to be monitored and protected when outside at all times! PREDATOR-THREAT IS A REAL DANGER! For example, a hawk tried to pick up a Chihuahua owned by a friend visiting Ninna’s house… RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VISITOR. Thankfully the visitor was watching the dog and the hawk was wrestled off of the Chihuahua but it did require an ER visit and she is was very lucky to survive. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY! *NO SMALL CHILDREN!! As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young children or a very active household is not recommended. Many of our dogs come to us BECAUSE of small children, thus we do not rehome our dogs to homes with babies or young children. KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU HAVE VISITING GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL! Even if the children are older, it would depend on the child AND the parent or parents. *HOUSETRAINING: We do NOT guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained. While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night. Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home. Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency. *KENNELING: We always recommend kenneling when you cannot supervise your dog. This helps with housetraining and any destructive tendencies until you get to know your knew addition. *We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome. Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate. *Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty. That’s our guarantee. Other notes: This pet is available for adoption through Ninna’s Road to Rescue, Benton, La. We are 501c3 non-profit organization.
