New Rattitude, Inc.

New Rattitude is a national, all-volunteer non-profit rescue/adoption agency whose mission is to rescue Rat Terriers (and mixes that are predominantly Rat Terrier) from imminent death at animal shelters, the streets, abusive/neglectful homes, or from owners who can no longer keep a dog, and to rehome the dogs into new and permanent, screened and approved adoptive homes. Each dog rescued is cared for in a safe and nurturing foster care environment where he or she receives appropriate medical care, a high quality diet, training and socialization. To achieve these ends, the organization is involved with transportation, volunteer recruiting and training, mentoring, fund-raising, and establishing and maintaining other programs deemed helpful to achieving the mission of rescuing and re-homing Rat Terriers.

Meet Cooper (VA)

Cooper is a 2-year-old mini rat terrier that was purchased from a breeder when he was 1.5 yrs old. His family tried hard to work with Cooper, but he had some reactivity issues with people. They surrendered him to New Rattitude, and he went to work with a foster who is also a dog trainer! Cooper has learned a lot of things with his foster. He can now cope with new people and situations, and has fewer outbursts. Aside from his occasional insecurities, he is a funny, friendly, sweet dog! Cooper loves the people he trusts and will wiggle and play bow to get your attention. He has become fast friends with his foster mom's dad, who is the nightly treat giver. Cooper LOVES other dogs and toys and is very playful. He has had no issues with any of the small to medium dogs in his foster home. He would probably do fine with cats provided clear boundaries were established with them. Cooper has made big strides learning to trust more people. He continues to learn impulse control and goes on walks regularly with people he isn't attached to. Doing this helps him learn that new people aren't as scary as he thinks. Cooper is EXCELLENT on leash. For this reason, his adopters must be able to come to his foster home to facilitate the first meeting. Cooper weighs only 7 lbs., so he is easy to manage and won't get any bigger! When he came to rescue, he was only partially house-trained used a belly band when inside but now he goes in and out with a dog-door and does not mark in the house! He is also clean in his crate.
