Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County

The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility owned and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It is located at the intersection of Rt. 29 North and Stagebridge Road (Rt. 624) , just two miles north of Lovingston. Presently the facility is open daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. The Adoption Center houses dogs and cats. The dogs are contained in individual rooms, one or two to a room, with wall murals painted by area artists and hemi-sync music from a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in the rooms getting acquainted with the dogs and cats prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are housed in colorful cat condos with handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching.Adoption fees cover the cost of vaccinations, worming, heartworm test or feline leukemia/aids test and spaying/neutering. All adult animals are provided these veterinary services prior to adoption. Kittens and puppies are adopted out with neutering certificates covering the cost of these veterinary services at the appropriate age. Many of the animals come from unclaimed or surrendered animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility. These animals have been judged to be adoptable based on temperament and looks. The Center does accept animals being surrendered by Nelson residents on a space available and adoptability basis. I am a volunteer. Among other things, I take photos of animals and post them on the internet for exposure to the public. Website: http://www.nelsonspca.org/index.htm

Meet Russell

Russell is looking for a family to give him some structure and hopefully a dog friend. He was adopted out last year and returned recently. When he came in, he was very scared. Our amazing staff, working with a local dog trainer has helped Russell turn things around. He has calmed down and is responding well to his training and play group. He has the look that folks seem to hope for—compact (43.6 pounds), black Lab mix with white socks. He is old enough (5 years) to have learned plenty of life's lessons but is still young enough to be curious and willing to learn.Russell was originally found traveling a dangerous highway by a good Samaritan. He came to us confused and frightened. At first, he would shiver and slouch into a corner but is quickly learning to love visits. He keeps his room tidy and appreciates his comfy bed. He is quiet and rarely barks. In the evening, he looks forward to a Kong chew toy with a treat smeared inside. Fill out our online application to find out more about him. Whoever adopts Russell wil have a free training session with our training partners at Camp Merricks to help with the transition and his continued confidence building.
