Meet Milea: Not at shelter

Malia is in the market for a new home.  Here’s the story: Malia has lived with the same family for three years. We were told she came from a puppy mill situation and that the puppy mill was shut down the day after she was adopted, so we can only imagine how sad it must’ve been for her to be born into that situation. Despite good training and socialization, we cannot change our dogs’ personalities, and as she has matured, it has been determined that she cannot be around small animals or poultry. She has also had issues with her normal protective nature as a German shepherd with other dogs around.  We have had German shepherds that were different than this, but this is her personality and her family has come to terms with it and feels a new home is the only answer for her to be happy. They have lost chickens and ducks that have wandered into the fenced area. She has an invisible fence rather than a physical fence so from the get-go, we will tell you a physical fence is going to be necessary if you plan to have other animals around Milea. her family says she is friendly with humans but of course she needs some adjustment time like most German shepherds. We appreciate that they were willing to take her home after an introduction to us so we can have a few days to try to reach out and find a rescue or a home. All adoptions begin with an application, found under the "Animals" tab on our website, friendsofcampbellcounty.org. *Unaltered babies under the age of six months can be adopted only to residents of Campbell County, the City of Lynchburg, and counties touching Campbell County. *Unaltered adult pets six months or older will need to be sterilized before they can be adopted outside our local area of Campbell County, the City of Lynchburg, or counties touching Campbell. *We do not promote dog adoptions to homes where an invisible fence is the fencing of choice. *We do not permit cats or kittens to be declawed following adoption. 

Adoption Process
Begin with an application to adopt. Other pets in household must be spay/neutered, current with rabies vaccines, dogs need to be current with HW testing and heartguard. Fees range between $75 and $300. We follow up on spays/neuters for pets under six months, and the fees include spay/neuter. Contract requires it. Adults are adopted out already spayed/neutered. Pets must be returned to FOAC if adoption ends.
