Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County

The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility owned and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It is located at the intersection of Rt. 29 North and Stagebridge Road (Rt. 624) , just two miles north of Lovingston. Presently the facility is open daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. The Adoption Center houses dogs and cats. The dogs are contained in individual rooms, one or two to a room, with wall murals painted by area artists and hemi-sync music from a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in the rooms getting acquainted with the dogs and cats prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are housed in colorful cat condos with handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching.Adoption fees cover the cost of vaccinations, worming, heartworm test or feline leukemia/aids test and spaying/neutering. All adult animals are provided these veterinary services prior to adoption. Kittens and puppies are adopted out with neutering certificates covering the cost of these veterinary services at the appropriate age. Many of the animals come from unclaimed or surrendered animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility. These animals have been judged to be adoptable based on temperament and looks. The Center does accept animals being surrendered by Nelson residents on a space available and adoptability basis. I am a volunteer. Among other things, I take photos of animals and post them on the internet for exposure to the public. Website: http://www.nelsonspca.org/index.htm

Meet Copper AKA PJ

PJ (better known as Copper,)is a 3 year old Walker Hound who found himself at Animal Control. He is around 60 lbs with soft, long ears that he loves getting rubbed. PJ is an amazing gentleman who enjoys the company of other dogs and people(though, his play style might be overwhelming for some small dogs). He tends to be too rough with cats,so they may not be good as housemates. The folks who had Copper (PJ) in their home for a while said he was clean inside and let them know when he needed to relieve himself He slept in a crate at night and was learning to use a doggie door. They also let us know that he gets car sick but that Benadryl helps. They found out that he does best with indestructible toys like Kong’s and Nylabones and that he loves treats especially Begging Strips or PB on bananas. Loud noises frighten him and he will hide in his crate for comfort..This handsome hound was fostered at Camp Merricks where he got basic training and socialization. Camp Merricks has donated a training session for Cooper (PJ) in order to help with his first weeks in a new home.Copper (PJ) is truly a good boy!
