This may be premature as he hasn’t had much time to decompress since arriving but I’d say this dog, while a mix breed, is mostly Shih Tzu just from the way he attaches. From the moment I picked him up all he’s wanted to do is cuddle. On the car ride home - on my shoulder. Being put down on the kitchen floor -climbing my leg back to a safe cradle position. While I was his first safe space and therefore hold a slight advantage, he will gladly snuggle onto anyone’s lap, including my 8 year olds (when she’s calm enough to be considered an available lap). As we work on his potty training he trots after me across the yard. He will need an owner ready to play some catch up on training, including potty training, but it shouldn’t be too insurmountable a task with this chill, happy, cuddly little boy. Again with the possibly premature judgement but from what I’ve seen so far he’s tentative but accepting of all humans big and small, dogs big and small, and cats. Calm creatures of all species would be his preference so far. Update: He was diagnosed with Lyme and after a week+ of antibiotics I can safely say that while I can see a little puppy in there now (chewing, a bit more pep) he is most definitely as expected for a 9m/o shih tzu and will make a great snuggle buddy. *This dog's adoption fee is $325.
Adoption Process
We have an extensive application process where veterinary references are checked (we require all current and past animals have been altered and that the client shows a history of good vet care) and we has a number of questions targeted at encouraging the adopting family to really consider if they are ready financially and emotionally to support an animal life long. We also try to match the right animal with the right home with consideration to the adopters previous animal experience, energy level, and general personality. After reviewing and approving and applicant (on paper), we meet with them and all members of their house hold including other resident dogs. We offer one week trials to ensure this decision is in the best interest of both human and animal. If all parties are confident upon meeting, then we have a contract which also states that if any anytime they are unable to keep the animal, that they will return in to our organization. Adoption fees vary from $100-275 based on age, size, and breed, with $175 as an average.
