ABBOTT NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Abbott Best Guess for Breed: Chihuahua/Terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 6 years, 5 months as of Jan. 2025 Gender: Male Approximate Weight: 17.7 lbs Gets Along With: Abbott does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog because he is shy. We haven’t seen Abbott with cats but he can be tested if you have them. We would be cautious placing Abbott in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant. Currently Living At: South Carolina shelter - Abbott needs a foster or adopter to make his way to the DC area Special Adoption Considerations: Abbott is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!Because Abbott is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog.Abbott is Looking For: Abbott is a 6-year-old dog with a stunning black-and-white coat and a gentle soul to match. This handsome boy might start off a little shy, but once he gets to know you, his heart opens up like a beautiful flower. With a bit of patience and love, Abbott will bloom into the loyal and loving companion you’ve been dreaming of. Because of his quiet nature, Abbott would thrive in a calm and understanding home where he can take his time to feel safe and secure. He’s the kind of dog who will appreciate a cozy corner to relax in and a kind hand to remind him he’s truly loved. What My Foster Says About Me: Coming Soon!
