Central Virginia Regional Rescue

My name is Laura and I am the president of CVRR. For 5 years I was the dog coordinator and board member for the Humane Society for Campbell County, where we had one of the largest and most respected foster-care-based rescues in the region. I have been a veterinary technician for 15 years. I have also been a trainer and behaviorist for 10+ years. My volunteers and I pulled away from HSCC because of a varying value system and different long-term goals, to create an organization based on a totally volunteer-run administration where every dollar goes to the animals' care. Educational outreach is also of paramount importance. Rescue has been a huge part of my life and my family's life, and we love having the opportunity to not only help animals get a well-deserved second chance but also play a part in completing a family with a new furry addition. Many volunteers in the rescue world I have found are very much animal people, but I enjoy the human aspect nearly as much as the opportunity to advocate for animals.

Meet Hulk

Hulk’s humans are having to move and they can’t take Hulk with them. Here is some info about Hulk from his family:  “Hulk is an absolutely amazing dog, he is loving and sweet and will never leave your side if he doesn't have to.  He does great with kids and other dogs. He is a little shy and barks when meeting new adults but quickly warms up and is all about the love.  Hulk has never been to a groomer before. We wash him at home and we file his nails (we have never cut his nails, he is scared of that). He is great with children, he does not have a problem with food at all (with people or dogs), our daughter feeds him his food (she's 1.5) and will even stick her hands in his bowl to grab some and feed it to him.  He is really amazing with children, his ears, his mouth, tail, feet, really his whole body is played with by our daughter and he is perfectly fine. He is great with the other dogs that he has been around (we do not know about cats). He is potty trained, he is not crate trained.  He needs some help with leash training, when we walk him we use a harness because he pulls so much that he will choke himself with just a collar on. Hulk really is an amazing dog, and he is the biggest cuddler ever." Update from current foster home:  Hulk is in a foster home with 3 young children and he is the sweetest dog! He likes to sleep in bed with the kids. He would love to be snuggling with someone on the couch all day but we try to keep him off the couch. He knows basic commands and listens very well. He pulls a little bit on the leash at the beginning of a walk but a few minutes in and he stays right by your side. He also has a female dog at his foster home who he gets along with great and even shares a bed with at times. He does not jump on people or on tables. He is very well mannered. When he first arrived he was scared of a lot of noises but now he has gotten used to our chaos and is a happy snuggly pup! I can’t say enough good things about him….he is so gentle and would be the perfect dog for a family.  *Hulk's adoption fee is $175.

Adoption Process
We have an extensive application process where veterinary references are checked (we require all current and past animals have been altered and that the client shows a history of good vet care) and we has a number of questions targeted at encouraging the adopting family to really consider if they are ready financially and emotionally to support an animal life long. We also try to match the right animal with the right home with consideration to the adopters previous animal experience, energy level, and general personality. After reviewing and approving and applicant (on paper), we meet with them and all members of their house hold including other resident dogs. We offer one week trials to ensure this decision is in the best interest of both human and animal. If all parties are confident upon meeting, then we have a contract which also states that if any anytime they are unable to keep the animal, that they will return in to our organization. Adoption fees vary from $100-275 based on age, size, and breed, with $175 as an average.
