Meet Skylar! This pretty girl was rescued by a Good Samaritan, Holli, in an area known for abandoning dogs. She was still just a young pup, under a year old. Skylar is the 4th dog Holli has rescued in the past year, and even with two kids, three dogs, and a cat of her own, she made room to take Skylar in to foster. When Holli reached out to Worthy Dog to find Skylar a forever home, we were happy to help Skylar was initially fostered in SC with Holli and her diverse pack. She connected with the kids right away, and regularly spent time around kids 1 to 11 years old. Holi did a gradual introduction of Sklyar to her pack and took about a week to fully integrate her. That worked really well, and Skylar was respectful with the other dogs in her home. She settled in quickly to home life and quickly proved to have excellent house manners - crate trained, housetrained, and was a good girl being left home alone. Sklyar is currently being fostered in Baltimore, MD in an only-dog home and seems to really enjoy getting all the love and attention. Skylar's primary passion and focus is her person, and she’s the ultimate pup companion. She is very affectionate and fancies herself a snuggle bug. She LOVES kids and will make a great family dog too. She is an active dog who needs her daily walks and playtime, and loves a good game of fetch, but enjoys cuddling on the couch too. She is grateful to have your attention and is going to flourish when she has a home and family of her own. After Skylar settled into her local foster home, we discovered she needed to work on her leash-walking skills and reactions to meeting new dogs. She’s been through multiple training sessions with one of our favorite trainers and her foster mom, Terri, has been continuously working with her. She has shown significant improvement walking in her familiar space, but will need a committed handler to work with her and give her time to settle into a new environment. Worthy Dog is committed to Skylar and her success and will donate a training session to help Skylar’s new family transition to her into their home. We feel the best home for Skylar would be one in a quiet, low traffic neighborhood and a yard to romp and play in would be ideal. Her favorite things are running and playing fetch and you can see how joyful and relaxed she is when she is free to explore. Skylar lacks confidence in new situations, so she needs an adopter with some leadership skills — someone who will set the rules and give her some boundaries, and build her confidence. She will gladly comply because she aims to please her person. Skylar is great as an only dog but could be paired with a calm, balanced dog with a gradual introduction. FOSTER MOM/TRAINING UPDATE -11/15/22 Skylar’s foster mom, Terri, checked in to share this update: “This weekend my friend visited and Skylar did great! No barking at all and she noted the improvement in her behavior. Inside, she now responds to verbal cues when she starts barking at delivery people or the mailman, she’s doing great with that command. She has also mastered going to her ‘place’ and will sit on her bed when I am eating or need her to take some quiet time. Thankfully, my neighbors are happy to let us use their yard for some extended play time which she loves! She does great on her walks after playtime and is so low-key after exercise. Skylar is doing much better on leash walks too. My neighbors have commented on how well she is doing…It’s a major change. She still gets excited about some dogs, but it’s much better since the training and she responds to my corrections quickly. She does fine passing a house with a dog in the window and is learning to quietly pass one in the yard. She is getting better about not pulling and responds well to heel when I stop. We are adding in commands like ‘sit’ to her daily walks too. It’s going great!” ** Worthy Dog will donate a training session to her new family to help make Skylar’s transition to her new home as smooth as possible.** Apply today!
