MICHAEL NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Michael Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and mastiff mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of April 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 74 lbs Gets Along With: Michael does well with other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area! Special adoption considerations: Michael is a truly Lucky Dog. Although he has tested positive for heartworms, treatment has been scheduled! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the screening process. Michael is Looking For: His forever home! This big, handsome guy landed in the shelter through no fault of his own and is eager to once again have his own humans for sniffy walks, world exploration, all that good stuff. Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed are on his wish list as well but you know what's right at the top? Knowing where he belongs, being safe and loved - and knowing upon whom to bestow his adoring looks, happy wiggles, and all the love and loyalty in his big heart. What do you say? Can you see Michael by your side? What Shelter Staff Say About Michael: Michael spent some time on the Dogs Playing For Life Canine Center campus in Florida. There, he received basic training and enrichment, and socialized with other dogs. Michael worked on the Sit and Place commands there. He also worked on loose leash walking and sitting at open doors, waiting to be released to go out. He also got to play with enrichment toys such as food-filled Kongs and food puzzles. He was a wonderful participant in doggie playgroups - he's very dog social and was really good with dogs who needed a little help socializing with others. What My Foster Says About Me: We will update this once he has arrived in the DC area and spent some time with his foster. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
