Underdog Rescue MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control. While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Meet Arlo

Please fill out a bulldog application to meet Arlo:   https://underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/bulldogs/        DOB:  05/24/2022 Requires another dog in home: No Okay with dogs of all sizes: yes Okay with cats: Unknown Okay with children under 12 years old: Yes Weight: 14 pounds Requires a fenced yard: No, but needs leash training Note: dogs must always be leashed whenever outside of a contained area. Invisible/ underground fencing is not recommended for most rescue dogs. Hi - I'm Arlo! Foster mom calls me Arlo, Ars, Arly, Arlo0o0o0o and I have to say, I answer to just about anything. I was rescue with my brother and we were pretty scared at first of this change to living in a home, but I was the more outgoing one from the start. I mean, this place is pretty great, what's not to love?  Foster mom can tell I lived in a cage until we came to Underdog because everything was new to me - stairs, running in the backyard, toys, bones, TVs, etc. Being that I'm a young guy, I'm kind of like a sponge and take it all in. I might need to be shown something a time or two, but once I figure it out, it's all good. I'd love to do a basic obedience class with you to keep learning more. I love treats and I'm a quick study. When we were learning about stairs off the deck, it only took me a few times to learn how to go up. I'm a brave guy and was just jumping off the side to get down and that scared Foster mom, so she made us a ramp and we cruise right on down that now. I am sort of the leader for my brother, so it's important we go our separate ways so we can each learn to be our own dogs.   I don't think I need another dog in my Forever Home, but if you have one that would be fun so they could teach me the ways of your house.  I have another adult frenchie here teaching me all the French ways and he's super fun. I like to run and race and when we wrestle I almost play more like a boxer - whatever that means.  If you don't have another dog, we could go to dog parks or play groups and make friends because I love to romp and roll!  I have a fenced in yard here and that's pretty cool to run around in. I am doing well wtih my potty training in the fenced in yard on a good schedule.  I will wear a collar, even though it's a little itchy, but we haven't done any leash training. If you don't have a fenced in yard, we would just need to work on that together.  There might be some accidents along the way while I learn that AND potty training, but I sure hope that is ok. With some treats and fun, I have no doubt we'd figure it out pretty quickly!  I really love good bones and stuffed dog toys. My brother and I have become expert ball fetchers, which Foster mom says is fun for a frenchie! I love to run and get the zoomies and go super fast! I sleep in my kennel at night for about 8 hours and just started learning about cuddling in bed and on the couch. It's kind of fun to snuggle next to you humans, but it's a new concept for me. The other night, the humans found a good scratchy spot and my leg started going crazy - I loved it!   I’m a growing puppy and I have not yet had a lot of experience with crates, kids or cats and I might bark if something alarms me, but I really love to learn and hoping for a family who will take me to a basic obedience class to continue to help me build confidence and dog skills. Ideally my forever home would need to be home during the day to help me with my potty training and not leave me for breaks longer than 3 - 4 hours. If you are looking for a best friend, please fill out the bulldog application. The more info you include on the application the better so I can find a good match for my forever home. Get your toy box ready! Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a  particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit.  Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   Bulldogs are a member of the Brachycephalic breed and therefore have a host of health issues that may arise.  Because these dogs are new into our rescue, health issues in the future may arise that we are not aware of.  Some of these issues are allergies, eye issues, yeast infections, interdigital cysts, slipped disks in their back, breathing problems, among a host of others that can occur at any time or when seasons change. While breed experience is not required, we encourage you to thoroughly research the breed and its financial, medical, and environmental needs to be sure the breed is a good fit for you and your family.  It is estimated that the average bulldog owner spends $2,000 per year on medical needs.  Arlo WILL NEED TO BE EVALUATED when he is full grown for nares and soft palate surgery at your vet, or a specialist. It is estimated that 80% of bulldogs need surgeries to improve their quality of breathing. While his breathing is good today, that could change as he ages.   Bulldogs are one of the most expensive dogs to own, maintain, and rescue and our adoption fees reflect such expenses.  The application process for bulldogs usually moves quite quickly as they are a popular breed, so we ask that adopters do research and be prepared for adoption at the time you submit your application.  They are happy, goofy, playful characters and we are excited you are taking the first steps into rescuing one!   This dog requires an application fee.  This fee must be paid within 24 hours or your application will be considered void.    We will not review or contact applicants that have not completed the payment portion. Bulldog Applications will be responded to within 5 business days, after receipt of the application fee.  Please understand that paying the fee does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt the bulldog. Our goal is place bulldogs in homes that are suited for their individual needs. You may be willing and able to provide a great home, but if it doesn’t meet the specific needs of the bulldog, we will not approve your application.    ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***

Adoption Process
Our process for adoption is: 1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application. 2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in. 3. The foster volunteer coordinates a “meet and greet” with you and any other members of your household. 4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
